Women's Basketball Headed Back to Conference Tournament With 74-66 Win at Lycoming

(box score)

Freshman Ally Ferrucci (Vineland, NJ) scored all 13 of her season-high points in the first half for Widener, which built a sizable lead and held on to clinch its fifth straight Commonwealth Conference Tournament berth with a 74-66 win at Lycoming in Williamsport, PA.

Following a pedestrian 14 minutes to begin things, Widener finally took over by using a 26-4 run over the last six minutes for a 43-21 halftime lead.  Ferrucci scored 12 points in that spurt for the Pride, who shot 7-of-14 from the floor in that span and held the Warriors without a basket for over five minutes.

Widener shot 43 percent (13-of-30) from the field in the half with Lycoming converting just 35 percent (7-of-20) and committing 21 turnovers.  The Pride also gained an edge from the foul line, going 14-for-17 with the Warriors making all six of their attempts.

The Pride led by as many as 63-35 with 9:29 left, but the Warriors did not give up.  Widener went eight minutes without a basket before freshman Geneva McCoy (Sicklerville, NJ) restored order on a layup with 1:28 remaining for a 71-57 lead.

Junior Lil Carney (Narberth, PA) poured in a season-high 20 points on 7-of-15 shooting with three 3-pointers for the Pride, who shot 37 percent (22-of-59) from the floor and gained a 46-31 rebounding edge.  Senior Lindsay Pepino (Oceanside, NY) added 11 points off the bench, six rebounds and went 7-for-7 from the line.

Junior Kate Dellinger (Wrightsville, PA) had seven steals to match her career high for the Pride, who closed with 19.

Widener (15-7, 8-3 CC) remains one game behind second-place Messiah (9-2), which survived a scare today at Arcadia after only leading by one point with 5 1/2 minutes left.  The Pride stay one-half game in front of Elizabethtown (8-4) for third.

Julia Antonelli scored 16 points and Rachael Scheller added 10 for the Warriors (10-12, 5-7), who were held to 39 percent shooting (19-of-49) from the floor and were tagged with 26 turnovers.

Widener is home Tuesday against No. 16 Lebanon Valley at 6:00 pm.
