Women’s Basketball Notches 63-38 Win Over Stevenson

(box score)

The first half was quiet for both teams, but Widener found its stride in the second half of today's Commonwealth Conference game to defeat Stevenson in convincing fashion, 63-38.

There was not much scoring in the first five minutes of the first half of the game for either team, with Widener leading just 4-2. Stevenson took the lead for the first time with just under 14 minutes remaining, 6-4.

Both Widener and Stevenson put up a number of shots, but neither team saw the scoreboard change until Kristina Reiter (Sewell, NJ) was inserted into the game in hopes of giving the team a much-needed spark. Seconds into play she tied the game up at six points.

The Mustangs (3-3, 1-3 CC) grew a give point lead, but Widener strung together a few nice plays to bring it back to a tied game. First Vanessa Hejnas (Delran, NJ) beat Stevenson's defense with a feed from Francesca Lee (Hainesport, NJ) for two in the paint. Just under the 10-minute marker and down by one, sophomore Ally Ferrucci (Vineland, NJ) combined a steal, a fast-break and a behind-the-back pass to Hejnas for two points, who was consequentially fouled on the play. Hejnas sank her one awarded free throw attempt to make the score 11-11.

After about a three-minute stall in scoring due to a lot of shots off the rim from both teams, Lil Carney (Narberth, PA) hit a 3-pointer at the seven-minute mark. Joanna Persiano (Absecon, NJ) ended another scoring halt with a 3-pointer of her own with 3:30 left in the first half.  Persiano then met Carney with a quick throw for two under the basket, followed up by Brianna Wylie (Mount Laurel, NJ) hitting a two-pointer in the paint.

Stephanie Martinez for the Mustangs executed a four-point play, hitting a 3-pointer and making a free throw on the play, bringing the score to 22-19, in favor of Widener. Wylie scored two off of free throws with 30 seconds left, leaving the score at 22-19 going into the halftime break.

Widener (6-2, 3-1) certainly picked things up in the second half of the game, outscoring the Mustangs by a margin of 39-19.

Carney started off the scoring within the first 15 seconds with two under the basket, followed by two from fellow senior Kate Dellinger (Wrightsville, PA). Ferrucci was quick to get another two on the board for the Pride, receiving the inbounded ball and driving it up the full-length of the court for a layup. With 15:45 remaining, Carney found a wide-open Lee under the hoop to bring the score to 34-19.

Stevenson gained its first point of the second half at 15:30 remaining off of a free throw, and followed up with a two-point jumper. With ten minutes gone from the clock, Widener outscored its opponent 22-3.

Following four minutes of no score change, Reiter fed Hejnas for two in the paint. A few plays later, Hejnas was fouled and awarded two free shots; she sank one to double Stevenson's score, 44-22. After being scoreless for nearly ten minutes, Kia Dawkins sank two for the Mustangs with just above six minutes remaining. She was followed one minute later by Kyarra Harmon to make the score 51-26, five minutes left in regulation.

Mustang Kayleigh Guzek hit two free throws, but was matched by Ferrucci who sank two of her own. Persiano hit a three-pointer soon after. The last four minutes saw Widener making seven points and Stevenson gaining ten, making the final score of today's Commonwealth Conference face-off 63-38.

On Wednesday, Pride hit the road to take on Arcadia, beginning at 6:00 pm with the men playing afterwards at approximately 8:00 pm.
