Women’s Basketball Defeats Albright 64-55

Widener traveled to Reading, PA tonight to take part in a men's and women's doubleheader against Albright and came home with a 64-55 Commonwealth Conference victory.
 
The Pride (5-2, 2-1 CC) got off to a good start in the first half, getting up on the Lady Lions 12-2 in the first four minutes. Freshman Sarah Engman (Bryn Mawr, PA) sank a layup just before the halftime break, leaving the score sit 34-19 in favor of Widener.
 
Coming back from the break, Albright (4-3, 2-1) got the jump this time in the first four minutes of the half, getting six points before Joanna Persiano (Absecon, NJ) hit a 3-pointer for the Pride to maintain a 10-point margin. Over the next four minutes, Widener sank three consecutive 3-pointers, with two going to Persiano and one to Kate Dellinger (Wrightsville, PA).
 
Albright got the score within five points with just under 10 minutes remaining, but Widener strung together eight points in less than two minutes to widen the margin again and give itself some breathing room. Lady Lion Jessica Venturelli hit a 3-pointer shot with 47 seconds left, but time expired and Widener received the win.
 
Persiano led the scoring for Widener, totaling 14 points in 24 minutes of play, making 5-of-9 field goal attempts and 4-of-7 three-pointers to go with three assists and two steals. Lil Carney (Narberth, PA) served up seven assists, and also added 10 points to go with seven rebounds.

Vanessa Hejnas (Delran, NJ) stole the ball three times, had six rebounds and also shot 4-of-6 from the floor for nine points. Carney, along with Jennifer Egee (Ridley Park, PA) and Francesca Lee (Hainesport, NJ), had two steals apiece to go towards the teams 12 total. Widener shot 44 percent from the floor and 50 percent from 3-point range.
 
On Saturday, Widener will host a Commonwealth Conference men's and women's doubleheader with Stevenson with the women beginning at 1:00 pm and the men playing afterwards at approximately 3:00 pm.
