Field Hockey Ends Season With 7-0 Victory Over Goucher

Seven different Widener shooters shared a piece of today's 7-0 shutout win over Goucher as the Pride played in its final game of the season at Beldon Field in Baltimore, MD.
 
Widener scored four goals in the first half on 18 shots. Senior Brittany Creighton (Pitman, NJ) got the scoring started just five minutes into the game with an assist from freshman Meghan Garvey (Landenberg, PA). Garvey then scored her team leading 14th goal of the season in the 25th minute, the assist going to Katie Ferguson (Glen Mills, PA). Nicole Nardone (Garwood, NJ) met fellow senior Olivia Burgese (Collegeville, PA) with a pass during a penalty corner play for the third goal of the game. A few minutes before breaking at the half, Creighton found Brittany Gunderson (Turnersville, PA) with a pass for her third goal of the season.
 
Coming back into the second half, Widener (6-11, 3-5 CC) was not done attacking. Nardone was awarded with a penalty stroke and she found the back of the net, making her three-for-four in penalty stoke attempts. Burgese assisted with the next goal with a pass to the back post to fellow senior Emily Norcross (Erial, NJ) for her fourth goal of the year. Samantha Balonis (Northumberland, PA) scored the final goal of the game in the 68th minute with a shot from the side that found its way past Goucher goalkeeper Demie Huffman.
 
As a team, Widener outshot Goucher 37 to one and had 15 penalty corners to Goucher's two. Demie Huffman was in goal for Goucher (4-12) and made 17 saves over the full 70-minutes, while Shelby Cross made two defensive saves.
 
Creighton put up a total of nine shots and was joined by Gunderson with six and Garvey with five. Maggie Karmeris (Wilmington, DE) (6-7) and Jessica Sochocky (Hammonton, NJ) (0-4) split time evenly in goal.
 
For the 2012 season, Garvey led the team with 14 goals and also had two assists, while senior Nardone finished with seven goals, five assists and three defensive saves. Hannah Dinsmore (Wayne, PA) led the squad with four defensive saves. Norcross ended with four goals on eight shots.
