Women’s Soccer Continues Strong Play With 3-0 Blanking of Lycoming

(box score)

Widener made the most of playing at PPL Park a second straight year in notching a 3-0 Commonwealth Conference victory over Lycoming.

The experience of already competing at the home of the Philadelphia Union did not faze the Pride (6-4-1, 1-1 CC).  In fact, it only took the squad 95 seconds to score.

Freshman Jenna Pedrick (Sicklerville, NJ) got the ball on the left side and fed a cross into the box for sophomore Karen Thomas (Mullica Hill, NJ), who put it home for her second goal of the year.

Widener's lead ballooned to 2-0 in the 23rd minute.  Junior Devan Doyle (Woodbury Heights, NJ) picked up a loose ball in the box and put one inside the left post for her second goal of the season.

The Pride were not done as senior Brittany Harvis (Delran, NJ) provided a big moment in the 25th minute for a 3-0 cushion.  She got the ball near midfield, worked her way through several Warrior defenders and blasted one home for her team-leading third goal of the year.

Harvis had three shots and Doyle two for Widener, which ended with a 12-9 advantage.  Junior Vanessa Hejnas (Delran, NJ) made four saves in just under 80 minutes to help the Pride to their sixth win in the last eight matches.

Leslie Kester and Jussae Hanford had four shots apiece and Jennifer Basch came up with three saves for the Warriors (2-9, 0-2).

The game served as a tremendous opportunity for Widener University, which entered a partnership as the official university of the Philadelphia Union, PPL Park and the Union's youth soccer partner partners, EPYSA and DYSA. The multi-tiered partnership that includes signage, television and web advertising spots not only aims to promote the growth of youth soccer in Chester but also to increase awareness of Widener University and its undergraduate and graduate academic programs.

PPL Park features a picturesque view of the Commodore Barry Bridge as well as the Delaware River. An average of over 17,000 fans have seen the Union compete at the stadium the last two years.

Widener returns to Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium on Wednesday against Arcadia, beginning at 7:00 pm.
