Football Turns Reading into Winter Wonderland with Fifth Straight Win, 60-20 at Albright

(box score)

Sophomore Tevin Campbell (Brookhaven, PA) played solidly at quarterback by totaling 211 yards for Widener, which notched its fifth straight victory with a 60-20 Middle Atlantic Conference rout of Albright during a driving snowstorm in Reading, PA.

Widener (8-1, 6-1 MAC) grabbed a 6-0 lead on just its second snap of the game.  Junior Dante Pergolese (Havertown, PA) took a handoff and raced up the middle 78 yards for a touchdown with 10:08 left in the first quarter.

The sloppy field played to the Pride's advantage early in the second quarter when freshman Brandon Harper (Bel Air, MD) forced tailback Zach Groff to fumble and sophomore Laquan Robinson (Chester, PA) recovered at the Lions 43 yard line.

Campbell ended the drive with a 27-yard touchdown run up the middle and Pergolese ran for the two-point conversion, giving Widener a 14-0 lead with 12:11 to go in the first half.

Albright (5-4, 3-4) cracked the scoreboard with 6:29 to play in the half when TJ Luddy hit Scott Pillar on a 39-yard touchdown pass to make it 14-7 Widener.  The drive was set up when Keith Bruno stripped Campbell and recovered at the Widener 40 yard line.

Widener got it right back on the ensuing kickoff thanks to sophomore All-American Laquan Robinson (Chester, PA).  He took the kickoff with the snow blowing toward him and raced 69 yards down the left sideline for his second career kickoff return touchdown.  Senior Brendan Curran (Sinking Spring, PA) ran for the two-point conversion, making it 22-7 Widener.

Albright got a break when Eric Wade blocked a punt by senior Kevin Huelster (Mount Laurel, NJ) that went out of bounds at the Widener 12 yard line.  Luddy capped the drive with 21 seconds to go in the half on a one-yard quarterback sneak, bringing the Lions within 22-13.

The Lions went for the on-side kick to start the second half, but the kicked failed to go 10 yards.  Widener took advantage of the short field by going 37 yards on six plays, ended when junior Chris Haupt (Bloomsburg, PA) hit senior Cedrick Clayton (Cinnaminson, NJ) on a nine-yard touchdown pass.  Sophomore Terrant Morrison (Smyrna, DE) ran for two to make it 30-13 Widener with 13:02 to go in the third quarter.

Albright closed to 30-20 with 4:19 to play in the third when Luddy found Pillar again, this time on a 21-yard scoring pass.

The Pride turned back to Campbell to widen the lead and he delivered.  Running through the snow and eluding tacklers, Campbell raced 63 yards for a touchdown to make it a 36-20 Widener bulge with 3:12 to play in the third quarter.

Robinson ignited Widener's next drive with a 26-yard interception return to Albright's 14 yard line.  Campbell continued his solid play by capping the march on a six-yard touchdown pass to junior Steve Marrero (Reading, PA) early in the fourth quarter for a 42-20 contest.

Campbell continued one of his best outings with his second touchdown pass, a 25-yard strike to a wide open sophomore Anthony Clayton (Cinnaminson, NJ) with 10:20 left to give Widener a 48-20 lead.  Pergolese got his second touchdown run midway through the fourth quarter, a 13-yard burst, to make it 54-20.

Senior Brandon Nye (Enola, PA) recovered a fumble for the Pride at the Lions 24 yard line and Campbell notched his third touchdown run of the game on the next play, extending the lead to 60-20 with 6:07 left.

This marks the fifth straight week Widener, which is second in the nation in scoring, registered at least 50 points to extend its own school record.  The Pride also forced a season-high seven turnovers one week after getting five against Lebanon Valley.

Campbell ended with 15 carries for 157 yards and three scores in addition to completing 5-of-7 passes for 54 yards and two touchdowns for Widener, which ended with a 406-233 edge in total offense and scored on all four red-zone opportunities.  Pergolese also had a day with 13 rushes for 135 yards and two touchdowns.

Sophomore Dylan Ditmer (Exton, PA) closed with eight tackles and junior Joe Wojceichowski (Riverside, NJ) posted six for Widener.

Luddy completed 8-of-14 passes for 110 yards and Josan Holmes ran 18 times for 53 yards for the Lions.

The victory also was the 650th for Widener in its illustrious history.  The squad became the fourth in NCAA Division III history to reach this mark and is 650-401 over 131 seasons.

Widener has a bye next week before visiting Delaware Valley on November 12 in Doylestown, PA at 1:00 pm.  The contest almost certainly will be for the MAC title and a berth in the NCAA Tournament.
