Down 27-13 in the fourth quarter, Widener turned to the electrifying freshman Laquan Robinson (Chester, PA) to get things started. He continued his standout campaign with a much-needed boost, making a 54-yard punt return for a touchdown look way too easy for a 27-20 deficit with 7:26 remaining.
It was Robinson's third punt return for a touchdown and his fourth overall return for a score.
Widener (5-5, 4-3 MAC) continued its surge with Del Val facing fourth down and inches at the home team's 30. The Aggies chose to run up the middle with Tom Devlin after standout Matt Cook got hurt, but senior Shane Szumski (Moorestown, NJ) and junior Dan Cosenza (Hamilton, NJ) were up to the challenge by stopping him at the line with 3:57 left.
The Pride faced further adversity with a fourth down and five and came through with Haupt hitting senior Rick Ritter (Marlton, NJ) on a 12-yard pass to the Aggies 35. Widener converted on another fourth down, this time with Haupt finding senior Adam Smith (Littlestown, PA) on a seven-yard pass and lunge to the 27 yard line.
Widener's third fourth-down conversion kept the game going with Smith bursting five yards to the 15 yard line with 25 seconds to go. The Pride then went to the bag of tricks with Haupt finding senior left tackle Harry Rannels (Sewell, NJ) on a lineman-eligible pass to the 11 yard line.
Following two incomplete passes, the Pride faced another fourth down but with just two seconds left. There was no worry as Haupt was patient and found Penna, who wrestled the ball away from a defender in the end zone for his second touchdown of the game and a one-point deficit.
There was little hesitation what to do from there as Widener went for the win. The Pride showed a formation with the lineman spread out and Haupt displayed confidence all the way. He threw a short pass to Clayton, who got great blocks from his linemen on the outside and ran inside the pylon for the shocking win.
The victory gives Widener back the Keystone Cup, which it won for the 23rd time in 30 meetings since the trophy was first presented in 1981. The Pride hold a 26-7 lead in the series and posted their first win in Doylestown since 2002.
Haupt completed 27-of-54 passes for 272 yards and two scores for the Pride, who amassed 360 yards of offense and notched 22 first downs. Sophomore Joe Wojceichowski (Riverside, NJ) closed with nine tackles.
Cook finished with 27 carries for 132 yards and Mark Hatty completed 17-of-31 passes for 203 with three touchdowns for the Aggies (8-2, 6-1), who had their five-game winning streak snapped. Mike Jaskowski closed with 14 tackles that included nine solos.
Delaware Valley opened the scoring on a drive that spilled into the second quarter after Troy Green intercepted a pass from Haupt. The Aggies converted on fourth down with Hatty finding Isaiah Hall on a 20-yard fade route for a 7-0 contest with 12:46 to go in the quarter.
Widener got a big break on defense as a deflected pass was picked by junior Gary Fish (Easton, PA) and returned 30 yards to the Del Val 11 yard line. The visitors capitalized on the next play, getting a touchdown pass from Haupt to Penna with 10:33 to go in the half for a 7-6 deficit following a missed extra point.
The Aggies widened the lead to 13-6 with 2:12 to go in the half when Cook scored on a 5-yard sweep. The nine-play, 90-yard drive was highlighted on Hatty's 57-yard pass to Dan Heiland that went to the Pride's 27 yard line.
The Pride wasted little time on the next drive, going 62 yards in just six plays for a 13-13 tie. Smith bolted in from three yards for the score on a drive in which Haupt hit Penna on a 19-yard pass to the Aggies 20 yard line. Haupt also found freshman Jermaine Quattlebaum (Upper Marlboro, MD) on a 17-yard strike to the three yard line.
Del Val re-established momentum in the third quarter. Hatty gave a pump fake and hit Heiland on a 21-yard touchdown pass, ending an eight-play, 80-yard drive for a 21-14 Aggies lead with 7:14 to go in the third quarter.
The Aggies fourth drive that started in Pride territory resulted with Mike Jaskowski deflecting Haupt's pass and intercepting it at the 31 yard line. It ended with Hatty throwing a 21-yard pass to Joe Gionfriddo in the corner of the end zone for a 27-13 game with 13:09 to play.
