Field Hockey Drops 4-0 Contest to No. 3 Messiah

(box score)

Widener gave its best effort, but ran into a tough team in third-ranked Messiah and was dealt a 4-0 Commonwealth Conference defeat at Edith R. Dixon Field.

Messiah (7-2, 2-0 CC) opened the scoring just under 14 minutes in when Kourtney Ehly assisted Juliana Hershey. It was Hershey who scored less than three minutes later following a pass from Ehly and Amber Good assisted Brooke Sands for a 3-0 margin just short of the 21-minute mark.

Widener's defense settled in a bit and managed to slow down Messiah's attack. The Pride (5-2, 0-1) also generated some quality scoring chances late in the half, including two penalty corners after time had expired, but Messiah goalkeeper Kayleigh Stewart made two brilliant saves to preserve the shutout.

The Falcons ended the scoring in the 49th minute as Dara Downs converted off Ehly's third assist of the contest.

Good had five shots with Hershey and Ziegler getting four apiece for Messiah, which closed with an 18-6 shots edge. Stewart finished with four saves.

Senior Megan Scarpinato (Sewell, NJ) and junior Kate Fay (West Chester, PA) each had two shots for the Pride. Senior Megan Purcell (Perkasie, PA) made seven saves.

Widener on Wednesday hosts Delaware Valley, beginning at 7:00 pm.  The Pride will host “Stick it to Cancer Night” and we encourage all fans to wear pink to the game. Donations will be accepted with all proceeds benefiting the National Foundation for Cancer Research.
