Widener's second-half comeback fell short as it was handed a 66-55 loss at Rowan in Glassboro, NJ.
The Profs (7-3), who led 24-9 with 4:20 left in the opening half, raced to a 26-15 halftime cushion despite shooting just 32 percent (12-of-37) from the field. The home team did take advantage of the Pride (6-4) hitting only 22 percent (5-of-23) from the floor and 2-of-12 from 3-point range.
Widener, which was down as much as 40-21 with 14:05 to play, went on a 17-8 burst to move to 52-49 with 4:17 left. Lil Carney (Narbeth, PA) scored five points in that run and fellow freshman Kate Dellinger (Wrightsville, PA) ended it with two free throws.
But a second-straight comeback from a double-figure deficit was not in the cards, eight days after rallying from 11 down to beat Swarthmore.
The Profs on this night benefitted from a place that had failed them most of the game, the foul line. The squad hit 11-for-16 from the stripe over the last 4:17 in a game it shot a mere 55 percent (18-for-33). Alissa Lamey was 3-for-5 in that time and four others combined for two free throws.
Sophomore Casey Pritz (Abington, PA) had 10 points and 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season and freshman Francesca Lee (Hainesport, NJ) scored 10 points. Freshman Vanessa Hejnas (Delran, NJ) had nine points and eight rebounds for Widener, which shot only 28 percent (18-of-64) from the field.
Amanda Jennings poured in 28 points and hauled in 17 rebounds for Rowan, which shot 34 percent (24-of-70) from the floor.
Widener is off until December 28, when it battles No. 7 Kean at the Wesley Holiday Tournament in Dover, DE. Tip-off is 7:00 pm.
