Women's Basketball Falls, 69-62, at Lycoming

Free-throw shooting doomed Widener late in the contest in a 69-62 Commonwealth Conference loss at Lycoming in Williamsport, PA.
 
Widener (9-5, 1-1 CC), which trailed by as many as seven in the second half, grabbed a 57-56 cushion with 3:23 left when senior Barbara Fleming (Philadelphia, PA) nailed a 3-pointer. She hit 1-of-2 from the line with 3:07 remaining for a 58-56 contest.
 
Lycoming (9-2, 1-1) took a 59-58 lead with 1:25 remaining as Allison Mock hit a 3-pointer. From there, the Warriors got it done from the charity stripe as they converted all 10 their attempts the rest of the way.
 
The Pride moved to 65-62 on a layup from senior Beth Dessart Mager (Newtown Square, PA).  But Mock, who shot 6-for-6 from the line in the final 1:25, hit two free throws to ice it.
 
Freshman Casey Pritz (Abington, PA) continued her tear in the paint with 22 points on 10-of-15 shooting and 10 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season. Fleming scored 17 points and junior Becky Tyler (Wynnewood, PA) grabbed 10 rebounds.
 
But the Pride shot a mere 46 percent (12-of-26) from the line that included 50 percent (8-of-16) in the second half. The squad hit only 35 percent (23-of-65) from the floor overall and 31 percent (11-of-36) after intermission for just their second loss in the last 10 outings.
 
Jessica Zerbee poured in 21 points with eight rebounds, Jessica Nabholz had 14 and 11 with Mock netting 14 points. The Warriors came through despite shooting only 40 percent (21-of-52) from the field that included 35 percent (8-of-23) in the second half.

Widener on Wednesday steps out of conference to visit Penn State Brandywine, beginning at 7:00 pm in Media, PA.
