2/9/08 -- Sophomore Becky Tyler (Wynnewood, PA) had 16 points and 11 rebounds, including three points in a free-throw dominated overtime as Widener notched a 68-64 Commonwealth Conference victory at Lycoming in Williamsport, PA.
Senior Stephanie Bixby (Boothwyn, PA) hit a jumper with 3:48 left in overtime and Tyler added two free throws with 2:53 remaining for a 64-60 Widener lead.
Rebecca Leid made a layup for Lycoming (10-10, 1-5 CC) to make it 64-62, but Tyler responded with 1-of-2 from the stripe with 2:25 to play for a 65-62 contest.
The teams proceeded to miss a bevy of jumpers and free throws before junior Megan Sipple (Boothwyn, PA) nailed 1-of-2 from the line with 1:07 remaining for a 66-62 Pride lead.
Leid hit two more from the line with one minute left for a 66-64 contest before sophomore Rayne Reber (Pottstown, PA) misfired twice from the stripe for Widener (10-11, 2-4 CC) with 53 seconds to go.
Andrea Cooper looked to bring the Lady Warriors even, but missed a jumper and junior Beth Dessart Mager (Newtown Square, PA) made 1-of-2 free throws for Widener with 28 seconds left for a 67-64 lead.
Seconds after Lycoming's next possession started, an inadvertent horn sounded and the home team again had to inbound the ball. This proved costly as Gina Manbeck was called for a critical offensive foul with 13 seconds to go and Widener took over.
Sipple was fouled and nailed 1-of-2 from the stripe for the final score, ending the Pride's three-game skid.
Widener kept Lycoming in the game by shooting 6-for-14 from the stripe in overtime, but the home team was just 1-of-10 from the floor in that span.
Tyler had five offensive rebounds and shot 8-for-10 from the line over 32 minutes in notching her fifth double-double of the season. Dessart Mager played all 45 minutes in scoring 17 points and Sipple contributed 13 points, six rebounds and six assists.
Widener enjoyed a 52-35 edge in rebounds and only committed 10 turnovers combined in the second half and overtime. The Pride overall shot 39 percent (23-of-59) from the field and overcame a 62 percent effort (18-of-29) from the line.
Leid ended with 15 points and 11 rebounds with Kaitlyn Ober scoring 10 points for the Lady Warriors, who shot 36 percent (24-of-67) from the floor and 7-of-27 from 3-point range.
Widener is home Wednesday against Lebanon Valley at 6:00 pm as part of the school's initiative to “Think Pink.” Fans are asked to wear pink to help the team and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) in the fight against breast cancer.
