Women's Basketball's Late Rally Falls Short in 72-65 Loss at Lebanon Valley

1/30/08 -- Widener trimmed a 21-point second-half deficit to two, but could not get any closer in a 72-65 Commonwealth Conference loss at Lebanon Valley in Annville, PA.

The Flying Dutchmen (15-2, 1-2 CC) over seven minutes scored 22 straight points bridging both halves for a 46-27 lead with 15:21 left. Lori Lidlow netted six points in that span and Jenny Gambino added five.

Trailing 62-49 with 5:05 to play, the Pride (9-9, 1-2) roared back with a 13-2 spurt for a 64-62 deficit with 46 seconds left. Junior Beth Dessart Mager (Newtown Square, PA) scored five points in that run, drilling a 3-pointer to end it.

But LVC took over at the line. Andrea Hoover was the main culprit, hitting 6-for-6 in the last four minutes including a pair with 38 seconds left for a 66-62 contest.

Hoover hit two more with 27 seconds remaining for a 68-62 contest and Gambino nailed a pair with 19 seconds to play for an eight-point game.

Junior Megan Sipple (Boothwyn, PA) poured in a career-high 21 points, Dessart Mager scored 11 and junior Becky Tyler (Wynnewood, PA) had nine and 12 rebounds for Widener. The visitors shot 35 percent (22-of-63) from the floor and were 6-of-21 from 3-point range.

Lidlow poured in 13 points, Mindy Bennett had 12 and eight rebounds and Hoover scored 10 for LVC, which shot 41 percent (24-of-59) from the field and 21-for-30 from the stripe. The Flying Dutchmen shot 17-for-23 from the line in the second half, versus 7-for-9 for the Pride.

Widener on Saturday hosts No. 9 Messiah as part of a doubleheader with the men's team. The women's game begins at 1:00 pm, followed by the men's contest at 3:00 pm.
