FREDERICK, Md. – Widener Baseball's secured the number two seed in the MAC Commonwealth playoffs after a crucial series sweep over the Hood College Blazers.
The Pride are now 18-16 on the season and 12-6 in MAC Commonwealth play.
BY THE NUMBERS GAME 1
- Myles Calderbank delivered a stellar performance at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs, and a run scored.
- Mark Selverian was a clutch run producer, finishing the day 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIS
- Kevin Bukowski consistently found his way on base, putting together a 2-for-3 line that included an RBI, a run scored, and a hit-by-pitch.
- Hayden O'Neill turned in a strong start on the mound to earn the win, tossing six innings and allowing just two earned runs on six hits while striking out one.
BY THE NUMBERS GAME 2
- Ryan Bauerle had a fantastic day at the plate and on the base paths, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored, an RBI, a double, two walks, and four stolen bases.
- Kevin Bukowski was a major run producer for the Pride, driving in three runs while going 2-for-6 with a double and two runs scored.
- Braedyn Clinton had a highly efficient day, finishing 3-for-4 with an RBI, a run scored, a walk, and a stolen base.
- Sean Burke consistently found ways to contribute, tallying two RBIs and scoring twice himself alongside a hit, a walk, and a hit-by-pitch.
HOW IT HAPPENED GAME 1
- The Pride wasted no time getting on the board, striking for two runs in the top of the first inning. Ryan Bauerle set the tone with a lead off single and quickly came around to score the game's first run on an RBI single to left center by Kevin Bukowski. Just a few batters later, Brendan Raven crossed the plate to score the second run of the inning thanks to a sharp RBI double down the right-field line from Mark Selverian. Widener's offense added on in the third, doubling their lead. Sean Burke drew a lead off walk, advanced to third on a Bukowski single, and scored the team's third run on a sacrifice fly from Selverian. Bukowski then scored the fourth run of the game when Myles Calderbank ripped an RBI single through the left side. Meanwhile, on the mound, Hayden O'Neill was locked in, tossing four scoreless frames to open the game and keeping the Blazers offense at bay.
- The game remained 4-0 in favor of Widener until the bottom of the sixth inning. Hood finally managed to break through against O'Neill, plating two runs on a two-out, two-RBI single to right field to cut the Pride's lead in half at 4-2. However, Widener immediately answered back in the top of the seventh. Myles Calderbank launched a solo home run to left field, providing a crucial insurance run for the Pride. Ethan Lytle relieved O'Neill in the bottom of the seventh and retired the side in order to give Widener a 5-2 win.
HOW IT HAPPENED GAME 2
- The Pride jumped out to a quick lead in the top of the first inning. Ryan Bauerle led things off with a double and Kevin Bukowski was able to drive him in with a fielder's choice to make it 1-0. Mark Selverian followed right up with a single through the left side to score Sean Burke, making it 2-0 Widener. After two scoreless innings from both starting pitchers, Widener added to their lead in the top of the fourth after Chris McKenna hit a lead off double and Bauerle drove him in with a fielder's choice. Hood got on the board in the bottom of the fourth, scoring on a dropped third strike to make it 3-1.
- Widener kept the pressure on in the top of the fifth inning as Myles Calderbank hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring home Kevin Bukowski. The Pride offense then completely exploded for a massive five-run sixth inning. Sean Burke was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Bobby Doherty, and Kevin Bukowski immediately followed with a two-run double to right field, scoring Ryan Bauerle and Braedyn Clinton. Mark Selverian then sent a sacrifice fly to left field to bring in Sean Burke, and Brendan Raven hit another sacrifice fly to score Kevin Bukowski. The Blazers answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth after a two run double and an RBI single. In the top of the seventh, Sean Burke recorded an RBI single to right field that scored Ryan Bauerle to make it a 10-4 ball game. Hood continued to chip away in the bottom of the eighth, scoring two runs on two RBI singles to cut into the lead. In the top of the ninth, Braedyn Clinton laced an RBI single through the right side to score Chris McKenna for what would become a crucial insurance run. The Blazers mounted a fierce comeback attempt in the bottom of the ninth, scoring four runs to pull within one. However, the Widener pitching staff managed to secure the final out, holding on for a thrilling 11-10 victory and a series sweep.

st for their second match up against the Elizabethtown Blue Jays. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
