READING, Pa. – Widener Baseball secures a series win over the Alvernia Golden Wolves after splitting Saturday's double header.
The Pride are now 6-9 on the season and 3-3 in conference play.
BY THE NUMBERS GAME 1
- Brandon Yoder was perfect at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a solo home run, a walk, one RBI, and two runs scored.
- Ryan Madden came through with a clutch hit, going 1-for-3 with an RBI single.
- Braedyn Clinton hit well, going 1-for-3 and securing a double.
- Pitcher Alex Epperly threw a complete 6.0 innings, striking out one batter and giving up zero walks while allowing three earned runs.
BY THE NUMBER GAME 2
- John Najdek pitched a dominant 8.2 innings to earn the win, striking out four batters while allowing just five hits, one walk, and a single earned run.
- Brendan Raven continued his hot streak, going 1-for-2 with a crucial two-run home run and drawing two walks.
- Kevin Bukowski sparked the offense by going 1-for-4 with an RBI triple and a run scored.
- Ryan Bauerle had another solid day, going 2-4 with two singles.
HOW IT HAPPENED GAME 1
- Alvernia struck first in the bottom of the first inning with an RBI single to left center, bringing a runner home for a 1-0 lead. Widener answered immediately in the top of the second inning when Brandon Yoder launched a solo home run to center field, tying the game at 1-1. Widener then claimed a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning after Ryan Madden hit an RBI single through the left side.
- The momentum shifted back to Alvernia in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Golden Wolves were able to drive in a pair of runs with an RBI double to take a 3-2 lead. The Pride offense was unable to regain that momentum and would lose game two of the series by a final score of 3-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED GAME 2
- The finale game of the series started as a pitchers' duel, with both teams scoreless in the first inning. Alvernia struck first in the bottom of the second inning with a solo home run to right field, putting them up 1-0. Widener managed to get some traffic on the base paths in the third inning with singles from Ryan Madden, Ryan Bauerle, and JP DiGuiseppe, but a play at the plate ended the threat without a run.
- Widener's bats came to life in the top of the sixth inning. After JP DiGuiseppe drew a two-out walk, Kevin Bukowski drilled an RBI triple to center field to score DiGuiseppe and tie the game at 1-1. In the very next at-bat, Brendan Raven smashed a two-run home run to center field, plating Bukowski and giving Widener a sudden 3-1 lead. John Najdek was masterful down the stretch, keeping Alvernia off the board through the eighth inning and getting two outs in the ninth. Ethan Lytle entered in the bottom of the ninth and struck out the final batter to end the game and secure the 3-1 win.
