BY THE NUMBERS

  • Matthew Christ would have a day, leading the team with 11 kills along with an ace, four digs, and four total blocks.

  • Michael Martino was great all around, finishing with ten kills, two aces, and four digs.

  • Josh Matchett was on point passing, racking up 35 assists on top of three aces.

  • Stephen Marquis was efficient with his scoring, ending with seven kills on ten attacks.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The first set would start close between the two teams, as the score would sit tied at five. The Knights would get rolling first, as a 3-0 run would see them up 8-5, but Widener's strong blocking would force another tie at 9. From there the score would tighten up again, as team's traded kills highlighted by Stephen Marquis' hitting and blocking. Approaching the home stretch, the score would again be tied at 19 each thanks to two timely aces from first year Jason Sandberg. Another ace from Michael Martino would tie the match at 23, but errors would again have the match tied at 25. A Christian Wannamaker kill and Knight error would finish the set, as Widener would narrowly win 28-26.

  • The second set again would be tight, starting at a 10 point tie, but a 7-1 run assisted Anioma Njokanma's hitting and blocking would give the Pride a 17-11 lead Josh Matchett kept the Knights reeling with his passes all around the court, and an assist to Wannamaker would give Widener a 20-15 lead. An ace by Sandberg and a block by Matthew Christ and Marquis would give Widener a 25-18 win in set two.

  • Neumann would start hot in the third set, taking a 2-5 lead early. Matchett again would be a major factor, as his four assists and ace would tie the match; and a Njokanma kill would have the Pride take an 8-7 lead. Martino's three straight kills would help a 4-1 Widener run to take a 13-9 advantage, and a Christ kill later in the set would set the score at 17-13. A 2-0 run and Matchett to Christ kill would finish the match 25-17.
