CHESTER, Pa. – Widener Men's Basketball's late energy surge would come short in a five-point loss to Wilson.
The 99-94 loss moves the Pride to 1-4 to start the season.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Jay-Nelly Reyes led the Pride with 20 points on offense and four steals defensively.
- Off the bench, Ethan Dodson would hold nine points and lead with 10 rebounds.
- The Pride shot 45.2% from the floor, saw 54 points in the paint, and accumulated 34 points from the bench.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Pride opened the game with a quick Emmett Kane steal and dunk to put the first points of either side on the board. The Pride and Pheonix went shot for shot before the Pheonix went on a small run. Kori Segich and Dodson would put in layups to make the score 10-15 at 15:33. Matt Johnson and Namisse Musonge registered points from free throws at 12:25 to cut into the Pheonix lead. TJ Bryson sunk a triple at 11:39 for the first of the half for the Pride. Myles Bright hit a jumper in the paint to try and swing the score after Segich hit a pair from the stripe. Kane's block would allow Reyes to put in a layup with under six. Musonge put in the final Pride points of the half to make the score 51-40 in favor of the Pheonix.
- Bright drained a triple out of half to put the first points up. The Pheonix would extend their lead to 18 before Keith Gee's fastbreak slowed the Pheonix offensive. A slow stretch of the Pride offensive would end with Jayden Lawrence putting in a layup at 9:49. Segich would begin to mount a Pride comeback with two layups. A steal from Dylan Schlatter would earn a chance at the charity stripe with 8:05 left. Reyes found a pair from the line and a steal to put in a quick four points. Reyes continued to find points with a triple at 5:04 to make the deficit 10. Another Reyes steal and triple started to swing momentum that forced a Pheonix 10-second violation. Segich put in back-to-back layups after a Schlatter block to make the score 89-86 with 2:26 left. The Pride would claw back with an officials review swinging the Pride's direction. A last second shot would end the game with a final score of 99-94 in favor of the Pheonix.
