Football Struggles in Third Against Lebanon Valley

CHESTER, Pa. – Widener Football falls to Lebanon Valley in a sunny afternoon on Hirschmann Field.
 
The 34-14 loss moves the Pride to 2-4 in the regular season and 1-4 in conference play.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Andrew Olsen led the Pride with 84 total yards on six completions.
  • Caiden Lesczynski led the ground game with 17 yards.
  • 34 yards in the air was shown from Colin Campbell-Williams.
  • Luke Shimko totaled 12 tackles and an interception which was returned for 28 yards.
  • The Pride offense put up 166 total offensive yards while the defense forced two interceptions and a sack.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • An early interception by Shimko would set up the Pride on the LVC2. Lesczynski's 1-yard rush let the Pride strike first with an early touchdown. Fred Adler tacked on the PAT with 13:27 left in the first. On the preceding kickoff, Luke Shaeffer forced a fumble and recovered the ball at the LVC20. A short series for the Pride offense ended in an Adler missed field goal. Shaeffer added two tackles on the Flying Dutchmen series while AJ Cintron broke up a pass. The Pride and Fly Dutchmen duked it out for the remainder of the first ending with a 7-3 Pride lead.
  • As the second quarter started, the Flying Dutchmen moved the game to 7-6 with a field goal. Lesczynski netted an 11-yard gain on the ground but the Pride would have to send the ball away on fourth down. Shimko's defense racked up tackles on the next series helping Joshua Salter intercept a deep ball on the LVC2 on a 50-50 pass. A momentum swing was close as the Flying Dutchmen muffed the ball but recovered setting up their 1st and 10. The Pride ended the half down 13-7.
  • The third quarter would cause problems for the Pride to being the second half. A blocked punt from the Flying Dutchmen would begin the momentum swing. The long drive started at 8:51 that would flip the field making the score 34-7.
  • To open the final 15 minutes of play, the Pride defense would force a turnover on downs. The Pride offensive series would be short as a false start penalty moved the team back. The Pride defense forced a three and out to get the ball back with 7:53 left. Olsen would take over as quarterback and moved the chains with an 11-yard pass to Dean Herr. Another pass would move the sticks before the Pride would turn it over on downs. The Flying Dutchmen would fumble the ball allowing Ryan Wilson to jump over it giving the ball back on the LVC39. A deep ball from Olsen to Anthony Charity-Quinn would make the score 34-14 after Alder hit the PAT. The game ended with the Pride falling 34-14.

Widener takes a week away from Hirschmann Field on Saturday, October 25 to face the 0-5 (0-4 MAC) Alvernia Golden Wolves in Reading, Pa. Kickoff is scheduled for a 1 p.m.
