CHESTER, Pa. – A 40-yard field goals wraps up OT in Widener Football's Homecoming win over FDU-Florham.
The 20-17 win snaps a three-game losing streak to move the Pride to 2-3 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Caiden Leszczysnki led the Pride with eight completions for 57 yards and a touchdown.
- On the ground, Michael Turner netted 33 yards.
- A touchdown from Khylil Jones and 61 yards would lead the air game.
- Luke Shimko added 11 tackles on the afternoon.
- Fred Adler hit a 28- and 40-yard field goals.
- The Pride 135 yards of total offense.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Pride would win the coin toss and defer leading to a long Devils drive. Jalen Walker would register the first tackle of the game along with Levi Santiago. Shimko and Walker continued to add tackles before the Devils struck first. The Pride would answer on their next drive with Leszczynski rushing for 23 yards to the FDU17. Adler put the Blue and Gold on the board with a 28-yard field goal.
- Walker would register a hurry up and force a turnover on downs to begin the second. Two back-to-back series would hold six minutes of play before Kareem McCoy picked up a few on the ground. Leszczynski hit Devin Ahmed over the middle for a 4-yard touchdown to take the lead 9-6. Another hurry up by Walker and a tackle by Shimko forced another turnover on downs. A wild snap would lead to a Pride safety making the score 9-8 before the two-minute timeout. The Devils drove to make the score 14-9 at half.
- Out of half, the Pride and Devils took shots at each other but Ryan Wilson picked off the Devils for a 19-yard return. The Devils would chew clock with an almost eight-minute drive ending in a touchdown. The score was 17-9 with 1:05 left in the third.
- The fourth quarter of play would begin almost the same as the third with 12 minutes of scoreless play. The Devils series at 4:47 would be a short drive with Tal Stoltzfus, Michael Miller, and Walker tackles. Luke Shaeffer would end the Devils drive with an interception and a 17-yard return to the FDU42. The Philly Special made its way to Hirschman Field with Leszczynski flip to Dean Herr for a deep ball to Jones for a 42-yard touchdown. A successful 2-point conversion would tie the game at 17.
- The game headed to OT with the Devils with the ball first. A seven-play series would be thwarted another Wilson interception in the endzone. The Pride would run twice from Leszczynski picking up two yards. Adler would drill a 40-yard field goal to take a 20-17 win.
