The Pride Come as the Reigning Conference Champions

9/3/2024 3:16:00 PM

CHESTER, Pa. - Widener Women's Basketball head coach Alisa Kitner unveils the 2024-25 schedule.

The defending MAC Commonwealth champions are coming off a 24-5 season including a 11-3 record in MAC play. They won their first six games straight and bested Messiah 68-62 to claim the MAC Commonwealth title. Their season came to an end in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Kitner speaks on the expectations for the nationally emerging team.

"Playing in a top tier conference, we have made our non-conference schedule a little more challenging and will be playing a few top 25 teams in the country this season."

Kitner has confidence that her team is up to the task.

"I am looking forward to a new year with a few new faces to help our squad. We have 13 returners who have high expectations for this season."

While the team parts ways with their senior guard Jordan D'Ambrosio, who won conference co-player of the year, the Pride return with many players with game experience. Junior center Mia Robbins will lead the crew while senior and junior guards Mary McFillin and Lindsay Kutz will also be top contributors.

Mia Robbins, a contender for national player of the year and former first team all-conference and all-region honor, is expected to be the team's top contributor. Robbins averaged 14.6 points per game and had a team-best 8.4 rebounds per game and .491 field goal percentage in her sophomore season.

The Pride start their season on Friday, Nov. 8 at the Elizabethtown Tournament that will carry on to Saturday Nov. 9. Their first home game will be Wednesday, Nov. 20 against Kings College. They will have a huge game near the close of November, as the team will host last year's national #14 team Christopher Newport on Saturday Nov. 23.

The December schedule starts hot with two formidable teams in Arcadia and Immaculata before a big test at home. They will host Dickinson College, a team that often hovers around national tournament talk, on Saturday, Dec. 14.

January tips off conference play, where the Pride will see many familiar faces looking to settle the score from last season. The biggest conference threat will come on Wednesday, Jan 22 when the team matches up against the Falcons of Messiah. Widener beat Messiah to win the MAC Commonwealth championship, and the teams split the regular season series. Messiah is often a national and conference playoff contender and will most likely be the top contender aside from Widener.
