Widener Softball Gets a Win For Fred in Delaware Valley Double Header

The Pride Split in Newly Named Fred Dohrmann Field

CHESTER, Pa. - Widener Softball splits in their Strikeout Cancer Out Cancer game against the Delaware Valley Aggies. In this event, the field was dedicated in name to former head coach Fred Dohrmann.

The Pride move to 7-11 in the 2024 and 2-6 in conference play.

BY THE NUMBERS: GAME ONE

  • Alyssa Gomez would lead the team with 2RBIs, both on the same hit.

  • Liv Robinson and Amanda Danz's 2 hits each would lead the team.

  • Kate Tong would have a team-best six put-outs.

BY THE NUMBERS: GAME TWO

HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE

  • Widener's fielding picked up where they left off yesterday, as they would force out the first three runners for the Aggies. Sara Clymer's single down the left line would score Kate Tong, who was walked earlier, to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning. The second inning would see no runs despite a hit from each team, and the Aggies would tie the score with a RBI single in the top of the third. First up to bat for the Pride, Kate Tong would send a rocket out of the park as she would get her second home run in as many days and take a 2-1 lead for Widener heading into the fourth.

  • Delaware Valley would get a hit in the top of the fourth but again three force outs would end their at bat there. In Widener's at bat, Liv Robinson's RBI single would send Caitlyn Katchur home as the Pride would extend their lead to 3-1 after four innings. The Aggies wouldn't score after a double play, and an Alyssa Gomez single to left field would score two as the Pride would lead 5-1. Delaware Valley put the Pride on comeback alert as an RBI single and 2RBI double would put them within one at 5-4, especially as Widener went three straight outs in their at bat. The team's fielding prevailed however, and a ground out would seal the game as Widener would win game one 5-4.

HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO

  • The Aggies would rally after a game one loss with a RBI single to center field that would put them up early, and three put outs would see the Pride trail 0-1 at the end of the first inning. An Aggie sacrifice fly RBI and another three up and out trip for Widener would extend Del Val's lead to 0-2 in inning two. The third inning would see a Blake Shuler single but no runs for either team as the Pride found themselves down 0-2 heading into the top of the fourth.

  • The fourth inning went by quick as neither team was able to record a hit, but an Aggie 1-run homer in the fifth would extend their lead further. The Pride again would not get a hit in the fifth inning and the score would now have them down 0-3. Delaware Valley stayed hot in the sixth inning, as a sacrifice fly out RBI and single RBI would lead to a 5-0 score and the Pride would go for no hits in response. The seventh inning would be more of the same for the Aggies, as a single to right field would extend their lead further. Widener would again get no hits in the seventh round, and the Pride would fall 0-7.

UP NEXT

The Pride will begin a three-game road stretch, starting with a trip to Reading, Pa in a double header against the Lions of Albright College. First serve is Saturday, April 13 at 1pm.
