HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The first set was close to start, with the score tied at five. A 5-1 Eagle run would put the Pride down 8-10, but Matchett's passing, kills, and blocks would have the team retake the lead at 15-14. A 6-1 Eastern run late in the set would put the Pride down 18-23, but a 7-1 Pride run led by Stephen Marquis' blocking would put Widener ahead at 25-24. Eastern would finish with three straight scores however as the Pride took a 26-28 loss.

  • A 3-0 run early in the second set led by Martino's hitting would put the Pride up 6-4. The Eagles would score three straight to tie the game at 11, and they would score two for every Pride point down the stretch. Christian Wannamaker's kill would spark a three-point run to tie the game at 19, and a Marquis kill would put the Pride up 26-25. Eastern would score four of the next five points unfortunately as Widener would lose the second set 27-29.

  • Widener would start the third set on the wrong side of a four-point run, but a Christ-led 4-1 run would have them take the lead at 7-6. Strong blocks would have Widener go on a 3-0 run to extend the lead at 10-8, and a four point run later would put the Pride up 16-13. Later in the set, Martino and Christ would lead a 6-1 charge to take the lead 24-19, and a Christ kill would take the third set 25-20.

  • Widener again would suffer a 4-0 Eagle run early in the fourth set, but Matchett's kill would close the gap at 6-7. Down 10-11 the Pride would explode with blocks led by Marquis as they would go on a 8-0 run to put them up 18-11. Christ and Martino kills would put the Pride up 21-13, and an Eagle attack error would have Widener take the fourth set 25-17.

  • In the final set, Christ's three kills would make up half of the 6-0 Pride lead to start. The Eagles would wake up and score four straight, but Martino and Matchett would get two kills each as Widener would go on a 5-1 run to take a commanding 11-5 lead. Ethan Cox's kill and an Eagle error would put the Pride in position to complete the reverse sweep at 14-7, and a Martino kill would seal the deal as the Pride would rejoice over the comeback victory with a 15-9 win in the fifth set.
