3/11/2024 2:00:00 PM

CHESTER, Pa. – For the second edition of Widener Athletics' Women's History Month series, entitled "Women's History Mondays," the Pride previews the women's basketball team.

Months after Widener debuted women's basketball, then-president Richard Nixon signed Title IX into law on June 23, 1972. Title IX states, "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."

Just 10 years later, the 1982 team made the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history. It was also the first year the NCAA allowed a women's basketball tournament.

Widener women's basketball is currently led by head coach Alisa Kintner. Kintner has been at Widener since the 2003-04 season, as she just finished her 21st season. Her career record at Widener is 324-220 (59.6%).

Two of the best players in Widener women's basketball history are Jordan D'Ambrosio (2019-24) and Devan Rimmer (2016-20).

D'Ambrosio's accolades include Rookie of the Year, two All-MAC Commonwealth First Team selections, two Second Team selections, MAC Commonwealth Championship MVP, MAC Commonwealth Co-Player of the Year, and she is a member of Widener's 1,000 point club.

Rimmer's accolades include Rookie of the Year, two All-MAC Commonwealth First Team selections, an Honorable Mention selection, two D3hoops.com All-Middle Atlantic Region Second Team selections, Widener Female Athlete of the Year, WBCA Honorable Mention All-America, and she is a member of Widener's 1,000 point club.

The 2023-24 season was one for the record books. The Pride had one of the best seasons in school history and the best single-season winning percentage in Kintner's tenure. They went 24-5 (11-3 MAC Commonwealth). Widener defeated Messiah two of three times in their season series, including in the MAC Commonwealth Championship 68-62 on Feb. 24, and made the NCAA Tournament on an automatic qualifier. The Pride went to Lewiston, Maine to play two games at Bates College. They defeated Springfield, but they fell to Bates in the second round.
