HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The first set started in Widener's favor, as they would jump out to a 3-0 lead early. The Mighty Macs would bounce back by scoring four in a row to take the lead at 3-4 but kills by Christian Wannamaker and Ethan Cox would regain the lead 7-6. The teams would begin alternating scores as neither team would manage to pull away. The score trading took the teams all the way to late in the set, where they were tied at 23 each. A Matthew Christ ace would take the lead at 24-23, but Immaculata would score on an error. The Mighty Macs would break the 24 tie, but the Pride would tie it up again at 25. An Immaculata error and Wannamaker kill would take the set in extra points, as the Pride would win 27-25.

  • The second set would start off similarly to the first, as the Pride would go up 8-2 early in the set led by Christ and Martino. The Mighty Macs would start a comeback highlighted by a 3-0 run as the Pride would lead by a smaller 10-6 margin. A 6-0 Widener run led by Cox and Matchett would surge the Pride ahead as they would lead 16-6. Immaculata would again fight its way back, but a 4-1 Pride run would put them up big as they led 20-10. Christ would continue his great night as two kills and three aces straight would see Widener take a 25-13 win.

  • The Might Macs would come out strong in the third set as they took a 3-6 lead quickly. Immaculata would continue to play well as they furthered the lead to 5-10. Widener would wake up a bit and a 3-0 run lead by Matchett's passing would bring the game back at 8-10. A 4-1 run would give the Pride the lead as the score turned 12-11. The teams would again alternate points, as the game would tie at 13. A Matchett to Martino kill would mark a 16-14 lead and the 2000th assist of Matchett's career. That moment in Widener history would spark the Pride into a 2-0 run as they led 18-15. The Pride would remain holding the lead later in the set as they were up 20-17 but Immaculata would not go away. Two straight scores by the Mighty Macs would tighten the score at 20-19, but an error and Matchett ace would put the game at 22-19. Immaculata again would surge back as the Pride would lead 23-22, but a Marquis kill would put Widener at game point at 24-23. A service error would finish the match and set as the Pride get the 25-23 win and sweep the Mighty Macs.
