OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Widener Men's Volleyball sees their win streak snapped as they fall to the Mustangs of Stevenson University on the road 1-3.

The Pride fall to 8-5 on the season and 1-1 in conference play.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Matthew Christ again leads the team in kills with 15. He also had a service ace, two assists, and a solo block.

  • Another game, another 30-assist performance for Josh Matchett. He finished with 30 exactly and added two kills, an ace, a solo block and two block assists.

  • Stephen Marquis was a key contributor in this game. He finished second in kills with seven and totaled a solo block and three block assists.

  • As a team, the Pride shot themselves with errors. They had 28 attack errors to 18 and seven reception errors to two.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The first set started with a Christ ace and proceeded with score trades down the stretch led by Marquis and Christ. Tied at 13, a 3-0 run by the Mustangs followed by another 3-0 run shortly after would have the Pride down 23-18. A Marquis kill and some errors would bring Widener back a bit, but they ultimately fell 25-21.

  • Starting the second set, a Stevenson 5-2 run would have the Pride down 3-5 early. A Stubbs kill would tie the game at 5, but the Mustangs would score nine straight to command a 14-6 lead. The teams would continue to battle, but a 9-2 run would take the set for Stevenson as Widener would take a 25-12 loss.

  • The Pride would start with a bang in the third set, as Michael Martino would lead the team to a 5-1 lead. A Wannamaker and Christ led attack would put Widener up 12-4, but Stevenson would wake up and cut the lead to 16-11. Christ continued to score in bunches as the Pride held a 23-18 lead, and a Marquis kill, and Mustang error would give the Pride a 25-20 win in set three.

  • Both teams struggled to start the fourth set, as errors would stumble both teams to a 4-point tie. A 5-1 Mustang run would open the lead as the score sat at 5-9, but a 4-0 run highlighted by blocks from Matchett, Martino, and Marquis would tie the score at 9. The teams would trade points down the stretch, but a 3-0 run would put the Pride ahead 16-14. Unfortunately, Widener would get five straight errors as Stevenson would regain the lead at 19-16. Christ would lead the team again as both teams managed to tie at 22, but three straight Pride errors would have them lose the set and match at 22-25.
