Widener Men's Volleyball Picks Up Fourth Sweep In A Row Over Elizabethtown

The Pride are 3-0 in This Home Stretch

CHESTER, Pa. - Widener Men's Volleyball gets their fourth sweep in a row as they take down the Bluejays of Elizabethtown College.

The Pride improve to 7-4 on the season and remain 1-0 in conference play.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Matthew Christ again was a machine. He led the game with 15 kills and added an ace, solo block, and block assist.

  • Josh Matchett to get 30 or more assists seems automatic at this point. He again finished with 30 assists and had a solo block and two assisted blocks to go with it.

  • Michael Martino again had a great performance. He totaled seven kills and three assists, also getting a service ace and a team-best 15 digs.

  • As a team, the Pride made it very hard for the Bluejays to get good hits. They forced Elizabethtown to 22 attack errors to just 12, and out blocked the Bluejays 8-1

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The first set started with a quick 4-1 Pride lead led by kills from Christ and Stephen Marquis. Ethan Cox would begin to lead the way with kills and blocks as the Pride would command a 7-0 run to further their lead at 12-4. Elizabethtown would stop the run with a 2-0 run of their own, but another Cox kill would put the game at 14-6. More back and forth play would occur, but a 3-0 run by the Bluejays would close the gap as the Pride held a 17-13 lead. Back-to-back Martino kills would spark a 3-1 run as the Pride reach 20 first, but Elizabethtown stayed in the game at 17. The set would come down to the final points, as a Christ block and Elizabethtown error would seal the game as the Pride would get the close 25-21 win.

  • Both teams came out much stronger in the second set, trading points and making less errors as the teams were tied at 11 each. Wannamaker would impress earlier with strong hitting and blocking plays, but neither team could manage a lead. Two Wannamaker kill and Marquis block would give the Pride their first lead, as they were up 14-11. Elizabethtown would go on to score three straight to tie the game at 14, but Marquis and Christ kills would regain the lead at 16-14. The Pride would trade points with the Bluejays, as the score sat at a 24-20 Widener lead. Elizabethtown would score again, but another error would lose them the game as Widener would take the match again 25-21.

  • The Pride would dominate early in the third set, going up 14-6 on four kills by Christ. Widener continued the great defense they had been playing all night, causing multiple attack errors and blocking shots. Martino's booming hit would put the Pride up 17-7 and in commanding lead for the sweep. Cox would get in on the action, as a kill from him and another attack error from Elizabethtown would put Widener up 20-10. Elizabethtown would try to mount the comeback, going on a 5-2 run, but kills from Marquis and Christ would put the Pride at game point at 24-15. The Bluejays again would fight to stay in it, as a 5-0 run would tighten the game at 24-20, but a Christ and Marquis block would end the set and match as the Pride would take the set 25-20.
