Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Men's Volleyball Falls to .500 in a Five-Set Loss to Concordia Univ. of Wisconsin

The Pride's Errors were the Difference in a Heartbreaking Loss

CHESTER, Pa. - Widener Men's Volleyball, despite a hard-fought comeback to push the game to five sets, falls in the final set as the Falcons of Concordia University of Wisconsin win the match 3-2.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Despite the Pride out-killing the Falcons 49-47, the 27-14 error margin was too much for Widener to recover from.

  • Junior Right Side Matthew Christ has put the league on notice yet again. He had a team high 18 kills and had two assisted blocks along with two service aces.

  • First Year Middle hitter Stephen Marquis looked impressive in his first start. He finished second in kills with nine kills and had a team high five assisted blocks.

  • Senior setter Josh Matchett yet again looks like one of the leaders of this team. He tallied a team best 40 assists, three kills, two service aces, and two assisted blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Pride would start the first set hot as Stephen Marquis and Matthew Christ landed kills left and right. Tied at 22, Marquis and Christ would score kills again, and an Ethan Cox kill from Josh Matchett would seal the set 26-24.

  • Widener jumped out to an early 4-0 run, but Concordia would later respond with a 4-score run of their own. The Falcons finished the set with a 6-1 run, and the Pride would lose the second set 17-25.

  • The Falcons would pick up in the third where they left off in the second, jumping out to a 6-2 run. Christ and Cox would keep the Pride in the game but down 22-23, two costly errors would lose the third set for Widener 25-22.

  • The trend of Concordia having an early lead would be thwarted by Widener in the fourth set as the Pride instead jumped out to an early 9-3 lead. Christian Wannamaker and Michael Martino led the way as the team would find themselves up 21-20. Widener would finish with a 5-1 run, capped off with a Martino kill as the Pride would push the Falcons to a fifth set, winning 25-21.

  • The final set was a rough one for Widener. Concordia again would command an early lead as the started 11-4 following multiple errors by the Pride. A service error finished the match as Concordia would take the final set and the Pride would lose 8-15.
