4x100 Record Falls at Widener Invitational for Women’s Track and Field

Muzzarelli, Gore, Giannella, and Barr set new relay record

CHESTER, Pa. – Widener women's track and field cap off the 2023 Widener Invitational with new personal bests and a school record.
 
Track
 
On the track in the 100-meter dash, Maria Muzzarelli and Jayla Gore continued their duo sprints as Muzzarelli clocked a 12.31 while Gore followed 0.04 seconds behind. Both read a -1.6 wind reading. Olivia Giannella marked just off her personal best as she stopped the clock in a 13.52 with a -1.3 wind reading. All times were MAC standards with Muzzarelli and Gore establishing AARTFC qualifications.
 
The three continued their racing in the 200-meter dash which resulted in all three establishing new personal bests. Muzzarelli led the group with a 25.31 to rank her second in the conference and second in Widener history behind Shakeira Fowler's 24.83. Gore finished with a 26.31 and Giannella set her best mark in a 27.75. Muzzarelli and Gore earned qualification standards.
 
Kelly Barr took home a first in the 400-meter dash to set her new personal best with a 57.30. Barr's time currently ranks her first in the conference nearly two seconds ahead of DeSales' Abigail Radcliffe. In Widener history, Barr ranks second behind Brittany Diehl's 57.01 from 2014. Tara Ford, Emma Schultz, and Carly Lownes also competed with Schultz setting a new personal best. Ford ran a 1:00.94, Schutlz's new personal best timed a 1:01.15, and Lownes saw a 1:03.95.
 
The distance group of Donna Holt, Jaden Sweely, and Katelyn Bernotas saw two new personal bests. Holt's 2:15.49 and Sweely's 2:17.42 were new bests to move them up to two and three in Widener history. Bernotas ran a 2:20.50. The three established new MAC and AARTFC standards with Holt running the fastest time in the conference.
 
In a Friday night 5k, Gabby Nye, Emily Cooney, and Kathryn Long took to the track with Nye running a personal best. Nye's 18:01.74 ranks her third in Widener history fifth in the conference. Cooney ran a 18:47.00 while Long timed a 19.35.33. The three ran MAC standards with Nye picking up an AARTFC time.
 
Sydni Bell and Elise Daniel competed in the hurdle events. In the 100 hurdles, Bell ran a 15.83 to set a new personal best while Daniel took the 400 hurdles and set a new best. Daniel clocked a 1:05.87 which earned MAC and ARRTFC standards.
 
Serena Azzalina ran a new best in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Her time of 13:15.07 was the first time running the event and cracked into the Widener All-Time Top 10 list at nine.
 
A Widener school record was set in the 4x100 with the team of Muzzarelli, Gore, Giannella, and Barr. The four ran a 48.16 to take down a 48.37 from 2002.
 
Field
 
In the field, Bell and Meredith Schroeder took to the high jump. Bell jumped a 1.46-meter mark while Schroeder jumped a 1.41-meter mark. Both earned MAC standards.
 
Savannah Steger in the pole vault marked a 3.25-meter jump to earn MAC and AARTFC standards. Currently, Steger ranks sixth in the conference from her jumps at the 2023 Danny Curran Invitational.
 
In the long jump, Tia Furbush set a mark of 4.54-meters to earn a MAC standard. Later in the triple jump, Furbush set a new personal best with a 10.31-meter jump to earn another MAC standard.
 
Isabel Rodriguez threw in the discus and hammer throw. In the discus, Rodriguez threw a 30.98-meter throw. In the hammer throw, she marked a 45.49-meter throw. Sydney Altman joined her with a 29.15-meter throw.

Widener returns to the track and field on Monday for the Haverford Mid-Week Meet and Friday at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa.
