HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST ALBRIGHT
Game 1
Bryce Fremgen had three runs in three at-bats. Fremgen,
Andrew Yates, and
Garrett McClain each had two hits.
Hayden O'Neill allowed six hits and four runs as the starting pitcher, but he struck out three batters.
The Lions attacked early in the first inning. A sac-fly and an RBI single gave them a 2-0 advantage. An RBI single with a man on second base in the top of the second extended their lead to 3-0. However, the Pride bounced back in the bottom of the second. With bases loaded, McClain hit a three-run RBI double to tie the game. They would load the bases later in the half-inning, but a fly-out retired the Pride. A quick top of the third put Widener back on offense, where they added one more run. An RBI single by
Stephen Posner put the Pride ahead 4-3 after three innings.
Albright's defense unraveled in the bottom of the fourth, as they allowed five runs. Widener put up two RBI doubles, a two-run Yates home run, and a score on a balk to lead 9-3. The two sides exchanged one run each in the fifth inning. An Albright RBI single cut into the deficit, but the Pride earned the run right back. A
Kyle Brex sac-fly scored
Anthony Boccio. The Lions' two runs in the top of the sixth were their last real attempt at a comeback. With two men on base, the Lions had two RBIs in the next three batters. They even recorded a double play on defense in the bottom of the sixth to give them momentum. However, the Pride had a double play on defense in the top of the seventh to end the game. Widener took game one 10-6.
Game 2
Boccio led the way with three runs. Brex and
Ryan Weaver had three hits each. Widener's pitchers allowed eight hits and seven runs, but they struck out three batters.
Justin Costanzo stepped to the plate in the bottom of the first as two of his teammates were on base. A fly-out turned into an RBI for the Pride to take a 1-0 lead. The second inning was a big one for both sides. Albright put up three runs. A groundout, a bunt, and a Widener fielding error was enough for a 3-1 advantage. The Pride's bats became hot in the bottom of the second, answering with five of their own runs. The highlight of the half-inning was a Boccio three-run home run. Widener would copy what they did in the second inning by scoring five more runs in the third. Two of the three scoring plays were for two RBIs each. The Lions ended the inning on a groundout. The Pride was ahead 11-3 through three.
While no runs were scored in the fourth inning, both sides had four batters reach the plate, and the only hit by both sides was a double. Down 11-3, Albright laid a foundation for a comeback attempt in the fifth. One RBI was brought in on a walk with bases loaded. After a few Widener errors, the Lions only trailed 11-7. The Pride, not wanting to give momentum to Albright, loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth. This resulted in no runs scored. Things would change, though, in the sixth inning. Widener added three final runs as insurance on two RBI singles and an Albright error. Despite a hit-by-pitch on an Albright batter in the top of the seventh, Widener retired the Lions in four batters. Widener won game two 14-7. They had swept their conference rival across three games in two days.
