HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST CABRINI
Game 1
Kaylin Johnson led the way with two walks.
Jill Gray allowed five hits and two runs as the starting pitcher.
Even though Widener's first three batters were walked in the first inning, three consecutive strikeouts halted the Pride's offense. An error by Widener's defense allowed an RBI for Cabrini in the bottom of the first. An RBI single moments later gave the Cavaliers a 2-0 advantage. In the second and third innings, both teams either had an unsuccessful steal attempt or they tried to get to an extra base. A Cabrini runner was out at home in the bottom of the second. In the third, both sides had a woman caught stealing. Neither team was able to score in those innings. After three, Cabrini led 2-0.
Although Widener's offense was stalling in the fourth, their defense forced three groundouts in four batters to make sure the Cavaliers' offense did not advance. However, the Cavaliers ripped off four runs in the bottom of the fifth. A two-run RBI single, an RBI groundout, and an RBI single brought the lead to 6-0. Cabrini's offense kept putting the ball in play in the sixth inning, but three groundouts in four batters kept the lead where it was. Unfortunately for the Pride, their final six batters were struck out. Widener lost the first game 6-0. Avery Byrnes of Cabrini threw a no-hitter.
Game 2
Leah DiGiandomenico gave the Pride their only run of the second game. Johnson had two hits. On the mound,
Mikayla Fedele allowed seven hits and three runs.
The Pride got the second game going with Johnson being on third base following some Cabrini errors. The Cavaliers, though, got the final out on a strikeout to prevent a run. Widener also played good defense in the bottom of the first. They caught a runner stealing home to retire the inning. The second inning was quick for both sides, with Widener's defense logging three straight groundouts. DiGiandomenico put the Pride in the scoring column in the top of the third with a home run to left field. However, the Cavaliers would tie the game in the bottom of the third on an RBI single. Despite the run scored by Cabrini, Widener finished the defensive inning on a fielder's choice and a groundout. The score was tied 1-1 through three.
An RBI double in the bottom of the fourth put the Cavaliers in the lead. Two batters later, an RBI single made the score 3-1. More Cabrini errors, this time in the top of the fifth, gave the Pride two runners on base. But, a lineout ended the half-inning. While the Pride caught another runner stealing home in the bottom of the fifth, Cabrini had an RBI single on the next play. The Cavaliers would get a woman on all three bases, but a pop-out led into the top of the sixth. Cabrini put one more run on the board in the bottom of the sixth. An RBI single with two women on base increased the home team's lead to four runs. Although the Pride looked to score a few runs in the final inning, the Cavaliers retired them in three batters. Cabrini won the game 5-1.
