Widener Softball Splits with Delaware Valley

The Pride Scored Five Runs Across the Doubleheader

CHESTER, Pa. – Continuing their four-game road trip, Widener softball took a split with the Delaware Valley University Aggies. The Pride won 3-1 in the first game, but the Aggies won game two 5-2.

The Pride are 10-14 in the regular season. They are 1-5 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST DELAWARE VALLEY

Game 1

Caitlyn Katchur, Kaylin Johnson, and Leah DiGiandomenico all had one run. Johnson had three hits in four at-bats. Katchur went all seven innings on the mound, allowing one run and striking out six batters.

The Pride did not waste time loading the bases in the first inning. A Sam McCarthy RBI single brought in Widener's first run of the afternoon. The Pride added to their lead in the top of second, where RBIs by Johnson and Jalia Lawrence scored two more runs. The Pride loaded the bases once again in the top of the third, but no runs were scored. Meanwhile, the Aggies could not get more than three batters to the plate in each of the first three innings. Widener led 3-0 after three.

Delaware Valley countered in the bottom of the fourth. With runners on first and third base, both stole the next base. Although the runner at second was out, the one that took home was safe. In the fifth and sixth innings, the Pride had no problems getting women on base. However, the Aggies' defense prevented more runs from coming in. Widener's defense did the same, as the Aggies were still stuck at one run. In the bottom of the fifth, Widener recorded three outs on three batters. Delaware Valley, looking for a spark in the bottom of the seventh, was unsuccessful at a comeback. Their only baserunner for the inning was from a walk. Widener won the game 3-1.

Game 2

Johnson and Lawrence brought in the Pride's two runs. Lawrence had three hits. Widener's pitchers allowed seven hits, but they struck out four batters.

The Pride jumped out to another 1-0 lead in the first inning. A Katelyn Tong RBI double scored Johnson. A quick second inning by both sides led into the third. The Aggies would score four runs in the bottom of the inning. They got their first run on an RBI single. Moments later, on a bases-loaded situation, a Delaware Valley RBI double was good for three RBIs. Widener retired the Aggies with a strikeout. Delaware Valley was up 4-1 through three.

Despite loading the bases in the top of the fourth, Widener was not able to score anyone. Delaware Valley, though, added one more run for the day on an RBI double. The score was 5-1. Both sides saw no runs in the fifth and sixth innings, but that did not mean they were not aggressive. They both left women on base, especially in the sixth inning. Needing at least four runs to tie, the Pride had two women on base in the top of the seventh. A Bella Walker RBI single scored Lawrence, but the Aggies retired the Pride on the next play on a pop-up. The Aggies won 5-2 in the second game. The two teams had earned a split.
