Widener Softball Sweeps Gwynedd Mercy Griffins in Wednesday Doubleheader

The Pride Outscored the Griffins 13-2 Through the Two Games

CHESTER, Pa. – The Pride took care of business on Wednesday, winning both games against the visiting Gwynedd Mercy University Griffins. Widener took game one 2-1, and they claimed game two 11-1.

The Pride are 12-14 in the regular season. They are 1-5 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST GWYNEDD MERCY

Game 1

Kaylin Johnson and Bella Walker had one run each. Eliana Guerrieri led the way with two hits. Mikayla Fedele went the entire eight innings, only allowing three hits and striking out three batters.

The first inning was quiet for both sides, as neither brought in a run. Johnson got on third base in the bottom of the first, but the Griffins ended the inning with a groundout. Gwynedd Mercy began the second inning with a double, and they would record an RBI two batters later. Although the Pride's defense made a quick stop in the top of the third, they were halted by the Griffins' defense in the bottom of the third. Gwynedd Mercy retired the fourth inning by getting a runner out caught stealing. After four, the Pride trailed 1-0.

As the second half of the game was underway, both teams struggled on offense through the fifth inning. The Pride finally got on the board in the bottom of the sixth, though, where a Guerrieri RBI single tied the game 1-1. The top of the seventh saw the Griffins with two runners on base. However, they were unable to bring them home. Widener would have to score in the bottom of the seventh, or there would be extra innings. Gwynedd Mercy prevented any threats to score, and the teams went to an eighth inning. With a runner automatically placed on second base for the Griffins, they advanced her to third base on a groundout. But, Widener's defense stayed strong and went to the bottom of the eighth. The Pride did the exact same thing as their opponent by getting their runner already on second base to third base on a groundout. Two batters later, Jalia Lawrence hit the game-winning RBI single to score Walker. Widener won the game 2-1.

Game 2

Lawrence, Guerrieri, and Katelyn Tong contributed two runs each. Liv Robinson had three RBIs. Widener's pitchers allowed three hits, but they struck out three batters.

The Griffins were the first team on the board in the second game, hitting an RBI groundout in the top of the first. They would put two runners on base following that, but a groundout ended the half-inning. Widener tied the game in the bottom of the first on a Gwynedd Mercy error. A short second inning led into the third, where the Pride ripped off seven runs. A Guerrieri RBI double scored the first run of the inning. Then, on a bases-loaded situation, a Becca Tiley single brought in two runs. Robinson's RBI single scored two runs, while the other runs were from a score on the throw and an RBI single. Through three, the score was 8-1 Widener.

Widener added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Two RBI singles and a Gwynedd Mercy fielding error resulted in Widener's scores. The Griffins got out of the inning on a strikeout. Needing a spark in the fifth inning due to the mercy rule, the visitors had a woman on second base after a steal attempt. However, the Pride logged a double play on the final play of the game. Widener won the second game in five innings 11-1. They had swept the Griffins.
