Aaron Nuble Comes Up Clutch as Widener Baseball Defeats Stevens Ducks

Nuble Hit a Solo Home Run and the Game-Winning Single

CHESTER, Pa. – Tied 3-3 in the bottom of the ninth inning against the Steven Institute of Technology Ducks on Friday, Aaron Nuble was the hero for the Pride. A walk-off RBI gave Widener a 4-3 win.

The Pride are 10-14 in the regular season. They are 4-6 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST STEVENS
Anthony Boccio, Justin Costanzo, Ryan Bauerle, and Nuble each had one run. Nuble and Kyle Brex each got two hits. Aidan O'Brien was crucial on the mound in the back end. In two innings of work, he did not allow a hit or a run, and he struck out four batters.

The Ducks put the Pride in an early hole, as they brought in three runs in the first inning. Although Widener recorded two outs on a double play, two singles that led to three RBIs gave Stevens their runs. Widener had their struggles on offense for the initial two innings, but their defense made up for it. In the second, the Pride got the final out on a pick off at second base. Following a quick top of the third, Widener went to work on offense. With Boccio on second base, Brex's RBI double scored Widener's first run of the afternoon. The Ducks ended the inning on a groundout. Stevens led 3-1 after three.

Even though the Ducks had a man on second base after a sacrifice bunt in the top of the fourth, the runner did not reach home plate. Neither side saw much offense for the next four half-innings. However, the Pride scored again in the bottom of the sixth. Andrew Yates hit an RBI single to bring the score to 3-2 Stevens. Despite this, Stevens recorded a double play to retire the inning. The Ducks were up 3-2 through six.

Once the Ducks' three batters were retired in the top of the seventh, Widener added to their total in the bottom of the seventh. Nuble made his first of two big plays on the day. A solo home run to left field tied the game at 3-3. To begin the eighth inning, O'Brien came to the mound. The Pride got out of the inning due to a Stevens' runner being caught stealing third base. Widener's offense in the eighth saw some success, but it was not enough to score. With Costanzo on third and Nick Barenz on first due to an intentional walk, the Ducks logged a double play to advance to the ninth inning. O'Brien struck out the final two batters in the top of the ninth, as Widener went on offense one more time. Xavier Ruley's sacrifice groundout put pinch-runner Bauerle on second base. Nuble was next in the batting order. He singled to left center, ending the game on an RBI single. The Pride won the game 4-3. It was their 10th win of the season.
