Widener Baseball Splits Conference Doubleheader with Alvernia

The Pride Struck Out 14 Batters, With 11 Coming in Game Two

Reading, Pa. – After a home win on Friday against the Alvernia University Golden Wolves, the Pride split a road doubleheader to the Golden Wolves on Saturday. Alvernia won 2-1 in game one, and Widener claimed an 11-5 victory in game two.

The Pride have a 6-10 record in the regular season. They are 2-4 facing MAC opponents.

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST ALVERNIA

Game 1

Anthony Boccio scored the lone run in the first game. The Pride had five hits, with two coming from Justin Costanzo. Hayden O'Neill started on the mound, allowing six hits and two runs.

Alvernia did not waste time getting on the board. They had a home run from their first batter in the bottom of the first inning. The Pride loaded the bases in the top of the second, but they could not get anyone to score. Widener defended well in the bottom of the second, though. With men on second and third, O'Neill recorded a strikeout to end the inning. Even though Widener was halted once again on offense in the third, the Golden Wolves brought a man home on an RBI single. On two of the last three batters for the half-inning, Widener recorded a line-out and a pop-up. Through three, the Golden Wolves led 2-0.

In the fourth inning, the Pride saw their one run come in. With a man on first and third base, Aaron Nuble smacked a single to make the score 2-1 Alvernia. The defense was also on display in the bottom of the fourth. Widener got a double play on Alvernia's initial two batters. Both sides had multiple threats to score in the sixth, but neither were able to bring in a run. The Golden Wolves left the Pride with one last chance in the top of the seventh. However, they retired the Pride on three straight batters. Alvernia won 2-1 in the first game.

Game 2

The Pride flexed their offensive might in game two. They had two runs each from Kyle Brex, Nuble, Ian Kauffman, and Jon Aman. Stephen Posner logged a team-high three hits. Widener's pitchers only allowed five hits, and they struck out 11 batters.

A Brex triple was the first hit for the Pride in the second game. Costanzo's pop-up turned into an RBI once Brex reached home plate. Despite Alvernia having a runner at third base in the bottom of the first, a strikeout ended the attempt. Widener had their most-dominant inning of the day in the second inning of this game. The Pride knocked in six runs on five hits. An Aman walk with bases loaded got things started. Brex continued his hot streak with another triple, which was good enough for three RBIs. Two RBI singles were the other scoring plays for the Pride. The score was 7-0. The Pride would add three scores in the third inning as well. A wild pitch and an Alvernia fielding error gave Widener the opportunity to pounce. Neither side scored in the fourth, despite having at least one runner on base. After four, the Pride were up 10-0.

Widener increased their lead to 11-0 in the fifth, thanks to a Costanzo RBI single. Alvernia countered with an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth. Although Widener did not score for the rest of the game, the Golden Wolves attempted to cut into the deficit. With bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth, Alvernia brought in two consecutive RBIs. They would add a home run and an RBI single in the seventh. However, a fly-out retired Alvernia's comeback. The final score was 11-5 Widener. The Pride had taken one of two games against their conference rival.
