Men’s Volleyball Comes up Short to Stevenson in Hard-Fought Match

Set 1: 26-28, Set 2: 20-25, Set 3: 14-25

CHESTER, Pa. – In their first home match since Valentine's Day, Widener men's volleyball fell to the Stevenson University Mustangs three sets to zero.

Widener is 10-10 in the regular season (0-4 against MAC opponents).

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST STEVENSON
Josh Matchett's 12 kills led the Pride for the match. Widener had 22 kills on 76 total attacks. The team's hitting percentage was .053.

A Stevenson attack error gave Widener their first point of the match. Neither team had an advantage early on, but the Pride tied the set at 4-4 on another Mustangs' attack error. As Widener continued to battle with their opponent, a 7-2 outburst put them up 14-12. This forced a Stevenson timeout. However, the Mustangs climbed back into the set and temporarily took the lead. As the score was 24-21 Widener, a few errors from the Pride would tie the set 24-24. The first set went into "overtime," as one of the teams needed more than 25 points to win. Widener, though, was unable to overcome a final 4-1 run by the Mustangs. A Matchett kill was the last Widener point. Stevenson took the first set 28-26.

Widener's initial point in the second set was from a Mustangs' service error. Facing an early deficit, the Pride used a 6-0 run to take the lead, 9-6. Despite this, the Mustangs would counter with a 6-1 push to give them a two-point lead. With the score at 15-12 Stevenson, and out of a Widener timeout, the Pride's next four points came from Stevenson errors. These were not consecutive, though. A Matchett kill and a Stevenson attack error cut the deficit to 20-18. However, a 5-2 run by the Mustangs at the end was too much for the Pride. A kill by Dylan Beer was the final Widener point of the set. The Mustangs won the second set 25-20.

After a 2-0 start by the Mustangs, Widener matched that on a Beer kill and a Stevenson attack error. The two sides kept it close for a few rallies before the Pride took a slim 6-5 lead. Widener then countered Stevenson's 4-0 run with a 5-1 run of their own to go up 11-10. A kill by Beer was the 11th point. But, the Mustangs began to pull away, recording an 8-2 push to go back up 18-13. Out of a Widener timeout, the Mustangs utilized a 7-1 outburst to end the set. The lone point for the Pride in that run was a Mustangs' service error. Stevenson was victorious in the final set 25-14. They won the match three sets to none.
