Albright Stuns Men’s Basketball in OT Thriller

CHESTER, Pa. – Despite a hard-fought game that went into overtime, the Pride fell to the Albright Lions 91-89.

Widener now sits at 11-5 in the regular season and 5-3 in the MAC Commonwealth.

HOW IT HAPPENED IN THE SCHWARTZ CENTER

Dunn opened up the scoring for his squad with a pull-up jumper to cut the lead in half. A turnaround by Schenk 40 seconds later cut Albright's lead to just three. With 15:19 remaining in the half, the Pride hit three straight buckets to counter two triples by the Lions. With the score at 25-20 in favor of the visitors later in the half, two Schenk field goals and a Steven Matlack three helped tie the game at 27. For the remainder of the half, neither team wanted to give an edge to the other. But, Schenk continued his strong start, as he converted eight of Widener's final 12 points of the half. The Pride were down 38-37 going into the break. For the first half, Widener converted 17 of 34 (50%) of their field goals, won the offensive rebound battle 3-0, and cashed in on eight second-chance points.

To open the second half, the Pride fell behind on a 9-2 Albright run. However, just beyond the 16-minute mark, a three-pointer from Schenk brought the score to 52-48 Albright. At 12:10, the Pride were finding a rhythm. A three from Dunn initiated a 10-2 Widener run. With 6:34 to go in regulation, Albright had no answers for Dunn. In the span of two-and-a-half minutes, the graduate student buried three triples. He even scored the final seven points for the Pride to tie the game at 81. In the second half, the Pride dished out nine assists, hit 17 of 28 field goals (60.7%), and were a perfect 4-4 from the charity stripe.

The overtime period was a back-and-forth affair. Widener's first bucket came from a Kenny Lewis layup to tie the game at 83. With under three minutes, the Pride got a timely shot from Pat Holden, who hit a three to bring the score to 86-86. Widener had a chance to win the game down by two at the end, but Dunn's three-point attempt fell short. Overall, the Pride had 50 points in the paint, committed six less turnovers than the Lions, and had 21 points off turnovers.

The Pride are on the road on Saturday in Mechanicsburg, Pa. They will face the 8-9 (3-5 MAC Commonwealth) Messiah in another conference matchup. Tip-off is at 6 p.m.
