OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Widener men's lacrosse team battled hard in the first half against Stevenson, but the Mustangs used a third-quarter surge to come away with a 19-12 win on Saturday in their MAC Commonwealth clash at Mustang Stadium.
Despite the loss, the Pride earned the fourth seed in the MAC Commonwealth Tournament after finishing the regular reason with a 7-8 overall record and 5-3 mark in MAC Commonwealth play.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST STEVENSON
- The Pride opened the game with a quick goal from Michael Tagliaferri off a pass from Connor Heisman in the first 1:07 of the game.
- After the Mustangs scored three straight goals to take a 3-1 lead with 4:33 remaining in the quarter, the Pride saw Matt Buckley and Heisman put in two goals in the final three minutes of the period to tie the game.
- In the second quarter, the Mustangs opened with five straight goals in the first 3:09 of the period to take an 8-3 lead. However, the Pride closed the half by receiving three goals from Heisman, Buckley and Zach Politarhos in the final 3:29 of the quarter to make it an 8-6 Stevenson lead.
- In the third quarter, Stevenson scored seven goals while Widener only put in one goal to make it a 15-7 Mustangs lead.
- In the fourth, the Pride managed to outscore the Mustangs, 5-4, to end the game. Heisman flung in a pair of goals, while Tagliaferri, Adam Oldrati and Bryant Maits added one goal apiece.
- Heisman is two goals away from moving into a tie for fourth on Widener's all-time goals list with 149 goals. The senior attack, who has 147 career goals, also registered his 29th career game in which he had scored three or more goals with his hat trick.
- Andrew Spencer made a team-high 12 saves for Widener in goal.
