CHESTER, Pa- The Widener men's volleyball team beat Alvernia in straight sets, 25-16, 25-20, 25-23, Saturday afternoon at Schwartz Athletic Center to finish its season.
The Pride capped their season with an 8-13 record and 3-10 in MAC conference play. The Pride's eight wins are the most they ever had in a season in the five years of the program.
The Pride also beat Alvernia for the first time in program history and avenged their 3-0 loss to the Golden Wolves from March 22.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST ALVERNIA
- The Pride started off strong, jumping out to an 8-2 lead and extending it to 20-10 before posting their nine-point victory.
- The next two sets were more of a challenge, but the Pride only lost the lead one time in the match to score the win.
- A solid offensive effort by the Pride kept them in the lead. Declan Quinn led the team with nine kills. Ethan Cox had eight kills and Carter Tran had six kills on the day.
- Josh Matchett became the first Widener player to surpass 1,000 assists for his career this season. The junior setter, who had 32 assists in the Pride's win and now has 1,136 assists for his career, finished the season averaging 8.25 assist per set, putting him sixth in the MAC conference.
- Cox tallied four aces on the day.
