CHESTER, Pa. - The Widener baseball team fell into an early hole and couldn't catch up, as it dropped a 14-12 contest to Alvernia on Friday afternoon at the Widener University baseball field.
With the loss, the Pride dropped to 19-17 on the season and are 8-6 in MAC Commonwealth play. The Pride are in a tie for fifth in the conference with Messiah. The top five teams in the conference qualify for the MAC Commonwealth Tournament.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST ALVERNIA
- The Golden Wolves jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning. However, the Pride got two runs back after Bryce Fremgen hit a two-run single to right field.
- Then, the Pride tied the game at 4 after scoring two runs in the second inning. Aaron Nuble drove in a run on a double and Anthony Boccio brought home the tying run on a sacrifice fly to center field.
- In the third, the Golden Wolves took an 8-4 lead after scoring four runs on three hits. But, the Pride cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the third on a pair of RBI singles from Nick Barenz and Kyle Brex.
- In the fourth, Alvernia put up four more runs to take a 12-6 lead. However, the Pride scored two more runs on a single by Barenz to make it a 12-8 game.
- After Alvernia added a run in the sixth, the Pride made it a 13-9 game after Austin Oliver pushed across a run on a sacrifice fly.
- After the Golden Wolves scored a run in the top of the ninth to make it a 14-9 lead, the Pride tried to make one last rally in the bottom half, but only scored three runs in the frame. Boccio scored a run on a passed ball, Justin Costanzo scored on a ground out by Jason Morgan, and Bryce Fremgen hit a solo home run to right field.
- Boccio led the Pride at the plate, going a perfect 4-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored. Barenz and Fremgen added three hits and three RBIs apiece. Brex, Costanzo, Morgan and Aaron Nuble chipped in two hits apiece.

The Pride will hit the road Saturday to face Hood College in a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader to finish the regular season. The first game will start at noon and the nightcap will follow at 3 p.m.
