CHESTER, Pa. - The Widener softball team stayed even in MAC Commonwealth play after splitting a doubleheader against Alvernia on Sunday afternoon at the Widener University softball field.
The Pride won the first game, 4-3, but Alvernia took the second game of the twin bill by a 9-4 count.
The Pride are now 16-8 overall and 3-3 in MAC Commonwealth play.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST ALVERNIA IN GAME 1
- With the game knotted at 3, the Pride took the 4-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth after Malia Calciano hit a solo homer just over the center field fence.
- From there, Widener starter Liz Renavitz recorded a scoreless seventh to secure the win. Renavitz earned the complete-game victory for her eighth win of the season after allowing only two earned runs on seven hits while fanning five.
- Along with Calciano, Renavitz and Bri Milz each had an RBI double in the win. Becca Tiley also pushed across a run on a sacrifice bunt and Mikaela Lovell had one hit in the win
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST ALVERNIA IN GAME 2
- Alvernia opened the game by taking a 7-0 lead in the first inning and a 9-0 advantage through two innings.
- The Pride started chipping at the deficit in the fourth inning after Calciano belted a three-run homer to center to make it a 9-3 ballgame. Then, Tiley took the Golden Wolves yard by hitting a solo shot to left field in the sixth to make it 9-4.
- In the seventh, the Pride saw Milz and Jalia Lawrence hit back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. However, Alvernia retired the next three batters to secure the win.
- Tiley and Sam McCarthy led Widener with two hits apiece in the defeat.
- McCarthy pitched well in relief, allowing only four hits while throwing 5 1/3 scoreless innings.

The Pride will host Delaware Valley on Tuesday for their Strike Out Cancer Night doubleheader. The first game is set for 4 p.m., with the nightcap to follow at 6.
