CHESTER, Pa. – The Widener softball team saw their nine-game winning streak come to an end on Tuesday afternoon after dropping a pair of games to Swarthmore at the Widener University softball field. The Pride lost, 5-3, in the first game and fell, 4-0, in the nightcap.
Widener, which had not lost since a 1-0 defeat to Waynesburg on March 3 in Myrtle Beach, S.C., is now 11-5 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST SWARTHMORE IN GAME 1
- Scoreless through the top of the fourth inning, the Pride got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth after Malia Calciano hit an RBI single to bring home Ally McDowell. The Garnet responded in the top of the fifth with a RBI single to tie the game.
- In the sixth inning, Becca Tiley pushed across two more runs after she had a pinch-hit double to put the Pride ahead 3-1. McDowell and pinch runner Liv Robinson scored on the play.
- However, Swarthmore took the lead in the seventh inning by scoring four more runs.
- Tiley, McDowell, Calciano and Kelly Dodgson had the only hits for Widener in the defeat. McDowell had a leadoff double in the sixth inning.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST SWARTHMORE IN GAME 2
- Strong defense by both teams kept the game scoreless until the fifth inning when Swarthmore put three runs on the board, two runs coming from a home run.
- After the Garnet added a run in the top of the sixth, the Pride tried to make two rallies in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings.
- In the sixth, McDowell singled and Calciano walked to put two runners aboard with two outs, but Swarthmore got out of the inning with a groundout. In the seventh, the Pride loaded the bases with two outs after Leah DiGiandomenico and Malia Lawrence drew back-to-back walks and Mikaela Lovell was hit by a pitch. However, the Garnet got the final out of the game on a strikeout to earn the win.
- McDowell led the Pride at the plate, going 2-for-4. Tiley and Calciano also each had a hit in the loss.

The Pride will host Cabrini University on Wednesday in a non-conference doubleheader that was rescheduled from March 9. Game one is set to begin at 4 p.m., with the nightcap to follow at 6 p.m.
