Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Pushes Past Penn State Brandywine, Extends Win Streak to Nine Games

Renavitz’s shutout win in game one, Fedele’s walk-off sacrifice fly in game two secure doubleheader sweep for the Pride.

CHESTER, Pa.- The Widener softball team won both games of a doubleheader against Penn State Brandywine on Saturday afternoon, scoring a 2-0 shutout win in the first game and a 6-5 victory in eight innings in the nightcap at the Widener University softball field.

With the victories, the Pride continued their wining streak, extending it to nine games in a row. The Blue and Gold have won nine games in a row for the sixth time in program history and for the first time since 2017, when they won 10 straight.

The pair of wins also put the Pride at 11-3 on the season. The doubleheader sweep was also the fourth straight one for Widener.

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST PSU BRANDYWINE IN GAME ONE
  • A scoreless game through four innings, Kaylin Johnson brought in two runs with a double in the bottom of the fifth to put the Pride on the scoreboard. Johnson's double was the first extra-base hit for her this season.
  • From there, Liz Renavitz completed the shutout on the mound to secure the win. Renavitz allowed only three hits and two walks while striking out nine batters to earn her fifth win in the circle this season.
  • Renavitz, Mikaela Lovell, Malia Calciano, and Mikayla Fedele each had a hit in the win. Renavitz had a double and one run scored. Bri Milz also scored a run for the Pride.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST PSU BRANDYWINE GAME TWO
  • With the game tied at 5 through seven innings, the Pride managed to win it in the eighth after Ally McDaid scored off a walk-off sacrifice fly by Fedele.
  • Before the exciting finish, the Nittany Lions had taken a 5-4 lead in the top of the fifth inning on a two-run single. However, the Pride answered right back in the bottom half when Becca Tiley singled to bring home Johnson to tie the game.
  • Fedele and Ally McDowell did the most damage at the plate. Fedele drove in three runs, while McDowell went 3-for-4 with and RBI double,  three runs scored and two stolen bases.
  • Tiley, Johnson, and Lovell added two hits apiece for Widener, which totaled 10 hits in the game. The Pride had 10 hits or more for the fifth time this season.
  • Renavitz earned the win in relief after striking out the side in the eighth to earn her sixth win of the season. The Pride also received great outings in relief from Caitlyn Katchur and Sam McCarthy. Katchur allowed only two hits while striking out two batters in two scoreless innings, while McCarthy yielded only two hits and an unearned run in one scoreless frame.
