CHESTER, Pa. – The Widener softball team swept its third consecutive doubleheader, downing Neumann in a twin bill Friday afternoon at the Widener University softball field.
The Pride topped the Knights, 4-3, in the first game, then took the nightcap by a 5-1 count.
The pair of wins put the Pride at 9-3 on the season. The Blue and Gold have won seven straight games as well.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST NEUMANN IN GAME ONE
- With the game tied at 2 through five innings, the Pride pushed across two runs in the sixth after Ally McDowell hit an RBI triple and Mikayla Fedele followed with an RBI double.
- Though the Knights scored a run in the seventh, Fedele finished the game by striking out the final batter. Fedele got the win in relief after allowing one earned run in 2 1/3 innings pitched.
- McDowell led the Pride at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. The senior outfielder also had an RBI single in the second inning.
- Sam McCarthy also had an RBI single, which came in the second inning to tie the game at 2. The first-year player now has seven RBIs on the season. McCarthy also started the game on the mound, allowing two earned runs on four hits while fanning three batters in 4 2/3 innings.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST NEUMANN IN GAME TWO
- Clinging to a 2-1 lead through three innings, Widener scored three runs in the fourth inning after Kaylin Johnson scored by going home following a stolen base by Ally McDaid, Becca Tiley hit an RBI single and Fedele had an RBI single.
- From there, Liz Renavitz and Caitlyn Katchur kept the Knights off the scoreboard to complete the combined three-hitter on the mound. Renavitz threw five innings and allowed only one run on two hits to pick up the win, while Katchur threw two shutout innings and yielded only one hit.
- Johnson and Tiley both had perfect days at the plate, as Johnson went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and one walk while Tiley went 2-for-2 with one run scored.
