CHESTER, Pa. – The Widener softball team swept Rosemont in its home-opening doubleheader in dramatic fashion on Friday night, winning on two walk-off hits at the Widener University softball field.
In the first game, the Pride saw senior
Bri Milz deliver a walk-off two-run double in the bottom of the seventh to lift them to a 6-5 victory. In the nightcap, first-year
Sam McCarthy smacked a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Pride an 8-5 win.
The pair of wins put the Pride at 5-3 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST ROSEMONT IN GAME ONE
- With the Ravens taking a 5-4 lead after the top of the seventh, the Pride rallied in the final half inning after Ally McDowell hit a one-out double and Mikayla Fedele drew a walk. Then, Milz smacked her double to bring McDowell and Fedele home to give Widener the win.
- Milz led the Pride at the plate, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs. The Florida, N.Y. native brought home a run in the first inning on a fielder's choice.
- Liz Renavitz also drove in two runs on a single in the fourth inning. On the same play, she advanced to second on a throw to home plate, then scored after an errant throw by Rosemont as the Ravens tried to get her out.
- Kelly Dodgson, Mikaela Lovell, and Fedele also each had a hit for Widener.
- Renavitz earned the victory on the mound after throwing a complete game in which she allowed only four earned runs on six hits.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST ROSEMONT IN GAME TWO
- After the Ravens scored a run in the seventh and a run in the eighth to take a 5-4 lead, the Pride came back once again. The Pride loaded the bases after Bella Walker advanced to third on a fielder's choice, Milz reached first on an error, and Becca Tiley was hit by a pitch. Then, McCarthy came up to bat and delivered her first collegiate hit in a huge way by cranking a pitch over the left field fence for her grand slam.
- Mikayla Fedele, Liah DiGiandomenico, Walker, and Tiley each had a hit for the Pride. Fedele hit a two-run single in the first inning, Walker had a RBI single in the third inning, and DiGiandomenico had an RBI triple in the sixth inning.
- Caitlyn Katchur picked up her first career win on the mound, as she pitched one inning of relief for the Pride.
- Fedele threw seven innings for the Pride, allowing just two earned runs on 10 hits.

The Pride will hit the road on Wednesday for a doubleheader against Immaculata. First pitch for the first game is set for 3 p.m., with the nightcap to follow at 5.
