MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Widener softball team opened the 2022 season on Monday by splitting a pair of games with Northern Vermont-Johnson and Waynesburg on the first day of the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic at North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex.
The Pride rolled to a 10-1 win in five innings over Northern Vermont-Johnson in the first game. In the nightcap, the Blue and Gold played hard against Waynesburg, but ultimately fell by a 7-6 count.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST NORTHERN VERMONT-JOHNSON
- After Northern Vermont-Johnson took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, the Pride broke out the bats by scoring four runs in the second and five in the third.
- In the second, Bri Milz smacked a two-run double to give the Pride a 2-1 lead. Then, Mikaela Lovell pushed across a run after lining out to first base and Kaylin Johnson hit a RBI single to bring home Milz.
- In the third, Mikayla Fedele kick-started the five-run rally with a two-run double to make it 6-1 Widener. Then, Ally McDowell knocked in a run on a single with the bases loaded and Malia Calciano drove in two runs on a double to put the Pride ahead 9-1.
- The Pride added their final run in the fourth on a Milz RBI single.
- Johnson and Milz led the Pride at the plate. Johnson went a perfect 3-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored, while Milz batted 2-for-3 with her double, four RBI and two runs scored. Becca Tiley and Fedele each added two hits in the win.
- Fedele picked up the win on the mound, allowing one earned run on eight hits while striking out two in four innings pitched.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST WAYNESBURG
- Trailing, 2-0, through two innings, Widener pushed across four runs in the top of the third to take a 4-2 lead on four straight RBI singles from Kelly Dodgson, Calciano, Tiley, and Liz Renavitz.
- After the Yellow Jackets scored three runs in the bottom of the third to regain the lead, the Pride grabbed the lead again in the top of the fourth by scoring two runs of their own to take a 6-5 advantage. Ally McDowell drove in the tying run on a double, then scored after a throwing error advanced her to third and allowed her to come home.
- Unfortunately, the Pride allowed Waynesburg to score two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead and eventually the game.
- Tiley paced the Pride at the dish, as she went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Dodgson added two hits for Widener in the defeat.

The Pride will play Mary Washington and Grove City on Tuesday. Widener will take on Mary Washington at 10 a.m., then will meet Grove City at noon.
