Softball Earns Another Split in Myrtle Beach

After dropping close game to Mary Washington, Pride top Grove City for 4-1 win

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Widener softball team split a pair of games with Mary Washington and Grove City on the second day of the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic on Tuesday at North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex.

After dropping a 2-1 contest to Mary Washington in their morning game, the Pride bounced back by beating Grove City, 4-1, in the afternoon. The split put the Pride at 2-2 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST GROVE CITY
  • After Grove City took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, the Pride quickly tied it up in the bottom half after Kelly Dodgson hit a RBI single. Kaylin Johnson scored on the play.
  • Then, Johnson scored again to give the Pride a 2-1 lead in the third inning after coming home from second base on a Grove City throwing error in which the Wolverines tried to get her out at third following an Ally McDowell ground out to the pitcher.
  • In the fourth, Mikayla Fedele extended the lead after scoring on a McDowell fielder's choice.
  • The Pride capped their scoring in the sixth with Dodgson driving in McDowell on a single.
  • Liz Renavitz picked up the win on the mound, as she hurled a complete game in which she allowed one earned run on six hits while striking out eight.
  • Dodgson and Renavitz both had two hits apiece for the Pride in the win. Johnson reached base in all four plate appearances after drawing three walks and hitting a single in the sixth inning.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST MARY WASHINGTON
  • The Pride and Eagles were scoreless through three innings before the Eagles pushed across two runs in the fourth inning to take the lead.
  • Widener cut Mary Washington's lead to one in the bottom of the sixth after Malia Calciano hit a RBI single to center field to bring home pinch runner Autumn Barge, who entered the game after Dodgson reached on a fielder's choice. Before coming home, Barge stole second base to get into scoring position.
  • However, the Pride could not rally in the seventh, as they went down in order in the seventh to end the game.
  • Calciano paced the Pride at the plate, going 2-for-3. Bella Walker and Abby Blake each had a hit in the defeat.
