Men’s Basketball Has Season End in MAC Commonwealth Semifinals Against Hood

Pride play tough in first half, but Blazers break away in second half to advance to conference title game

FREDERICK, Md. - The Widener men's basketball team fought hard in the first half against second-seeded Hood, but the sixth-seeded Pride could not punch their ticket to the MAC Commonwealth Tournament final as the Blazers pulled away in the second half to earn a 90-77 win in the MAC Commonwealth semifinals on Friday night at BB&T Arena.

With the loss, the Pride ended their 2021-22 campaign with a 13-14 record that featured their fourth conference semifinal appearance in six seasons.

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST HOOD
  • The Pride got down, 27-13, with 9:52 remaining in the first half, but managed to close the half with a 22-10 run to trail the Blazers, 37-35, at halftime. Pat Holden scored all of his eight points in the half during that run, which he closed by hitting a three-pointer with 58 seconds remaining.
  • In the second half, the Pride managed to trim Hood's lead down to 44-43 with 16:43 remaining after Matt Daulerio scored all eight of the team's points to start the half in that 3:17 span. However, the Blazers broke the game open by scoring 43 points over the next 15 minutes to take a 15-point lead that they would not relinquish.
  • Daulerio paced the Pride, pouring in a game-high 25 points. The Chester Springs, Pa. native scored 21 of his 25 points in the second half.
  • Along with Daulerio, the Pride saw Holden and Jared Peters score 13 points apiece in the defeat.
  • With his 13 points, Peters finished in 18th-place on the Widener men's basketball all-time scoring list with 1,174 career points.
