CHESTER, Pa. - The Widener men's basketball team closed a 14-point gap to just one point in the second half but was unable to complete the comeback on Senior Day as Messiah came away with a 54-49 victory Saturday afternoon at Schwartz Athletic Center.
With the loss, the Pride finished the regular season with a 12-13 record and e 6-10 record in MAC Commonwealth play. They also were named the sixth seed in the upcoming MAC Commonwealth Tournament.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST MESSIAH
- Trailing, 41-27, with 11:58 left, the Pride put together a 20-7 run to close the gap to just one point with 2:40 remaining. Kolbey Woodard and AJ Sawyers each scored six points during the run, with Woodard cutting the Messiah lead to 48-47 on a fast break layup with 2:40 left on the clock.
- However, the Falcons held the Pride to one basket while going on to score six points to finish the game out and walk away with the win.
- Steven Matlack led the Blue and Gold in scoring with 14 points. The Mount Laurel, N.J. native was the only Widener player in double figures.
- Defensively, Kenny Lewis paced the Pride with nine rebounds, and Jared Peters and Kevin Schenk both tallied three steals for the day.
- Before the game, the Pride honored Woodard and graduate student Jared Peters for their hard work and dedication to the program over the last four years.

The Pride will play third-seeded Alvernia in the MAC Commonwealth quarterfinals on Wednesday night at Alvernia. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
