WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senior
Jordan D'Ambrosio amassed 31 total points against Berea (Ky.) and Catholic during the Holiday Tournament to be named All-Tournament Team. D'Ambrosio led the Pride in two tough contests in our Nation's Capital but came up short handed.
The Pride battled undefeated Berea in a Monday afternoon game and Landmark Conference high ranking Catholic in a Tuesday afternoon matchup. Following the defeats, the Pride end 2022 with a 4-9 record and remain 1-3 in MAC Commonwealth play.
GAME 1 vs Berea (Ky.)
The Pride first game featured the Mountaineers of Berea College in Kentucky. The ladies jumped to a quick 17-13 lead in the first quarter against the undefeated Mountaineers. In the first the team shot 4 of 9 (44.44%) from the floor and dropped 3 of 6 (50%) from the arc. Going into halftime the Pride found themselves up eight after outscoring the Mountaineers 14-10 in the second quarter.
Gianna Samuels and
Mia Robbins helped guide the Pride to 31 points in the first and shoot 4 of 12 from the floor while also adding six points from three-point shots.
Coming out of halftime the Pride looked to hang on to their lead. During the third the team shot 7 of 13 (33.33%) and 2 of 4 (50%) from three. The Mountaineers took the third quarter scoring 23 to the Pride's 17 points to narrow the margin to two with a quarter to play. As time ticked down the Pride battled but was outscored 21-10 in the fourth. D'Ambrosio dished four blocks to try and stop the charging Mountaineers while also sinking 14 points to lead the team. Widener saw 20 points in the paint, seven off loose Mountaineer balls, and 15 second chance points. After 60 minutes of play, the Mountaineers topped the score 67-58.
GAME 2 vs Catholic University
The Blue and Gold's Tuesday game featured the Catholic University Cardinals. Again, the ladies jumped out to a quick 18-13 lead in the first to shoot 7 of 13 (53.85%) from the floor and saw a perfect 4 of 4 from the free throw line. The second quarter saw a Cardinal lead change while outscoring 22-15. Going into halftime with a two-point deficit, the Pride looked to get its flow going. The second quarter brought 4 of 9 (44.44) from the floor, a three pointer, and six foul shots.
Trailing by two the Pride opened the third quarter looking to take their lead back but saw 20 Cardinal points to their 12. In the third the team shot 4 of 13 (38.46%) from the floor. The fourth quarter fell on the Pride's side but wasn't enough to counter the 10-point Cardinal lead. D'Ambrosio,
Avalynn Baer, and
Lindsay Kutz looked to lead the Pride's fourth quarter run by helping the team score 19-points to the Cardinal's 18. The team shot 7 of 19 (36.84%) in field goals, 4 of 10 (40%) from the arc, and dropped another perfect point from the foul line. Over the course of 60 minutes, the Blue and Gold saw 26 points in the paint, 17 points off Cardinal turnovers, and nine second chance points.
