CHESTER, Pa. – The Widener women's soccer team qualified for the MAC Commonwealth Tournament for the first time in four seasons on Wednesday night after posting a 4-1 victory over Alvernia at Elizabeth J. Hirschmann Field at Leslie C. Quick, Jr. Stadium.
The win put the Pride at 4-2-1 in MAC Commonwealth play and 8-5-4 overall on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST ALVERNIA
- The Pride fired in three of their four goals in the first half. Melissa Koch opened the scoring with a goal in the 17th minute, then Kelly Barr found the back of the net in the 35th minute off a pass from Kayla Taylor, and Hannah Berard banged in the third goal off a pass from Jena Luck in the 40th minute.
- In the second half, Alvernia cut the Pride's advantage to 3-1 after scoring a goal in the 54th minute, but the Blue and Gold extended the lead back to three in the 89th minute after Madison Blackshire scored off a rebound on Maggie Boyes' shot.
- The Pride finished the game outshooting the Golden Wolves, 17-6. Barr led the Pride with four shots, two of which were on goal. Koch and Blackshire followed with two shots apiece.
- Samantha Coon made three saves in the first half before turning goalkeeping duties to Nicole Rende in the second half.

Widener will host Messiah in its Senior Day game and final MAC Commonwealth match of the regular season on Saturday at 1 p.m. A win for the Pride would secure the fourth seed in the MAC Commonwealth Tournament. A loss for the Pride and a Hood win would put them as the fifth seed in the tournament.
