BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Widener women's basketball team fell just short of a sweep at the Steel Club Classic tournament, as it lost a 64-61 contest to Mary Washington on Monday afternoon at Johnston Hall at Moravian University.
Jordan D'Ambrosio led the way for the Pride (8-5), scoring 14 points after netting 20 in Sunday's 69-63 win over Moravian. For her efforts, the Springfield, Pa. native earned a spot on the All-Tournament team.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST MARY WASHINGTON
- The Pride almost forced the game into overtime, as they took a three-pointer with 1.2 seconds left from the right corner. Unfortunately, the shot hit the front of the rim and Mary Washington rebounded it to earn the win.
- The Pride jumped out to a 17-8 lead through the first quarter. Nicole Barnes paced the Pride during the quarter, scoring six of her 12 points in the frame.
- The Pride's lead slipped away in the second quarter, as they were outscored by the Eagles, 23-10, and trailed by four points at halftime.
- The Blue and Gold chipped at the Eagles' lead in the third quarter and managed to take a 53-48 lead in the fourth quarter by going on a 7-0 run to begin the period. D'Ambrosio, Jasmine Franklin, and Gianna Samuels each made a basket and Stephanie Schmitt converted a free throw during the run. However, the Eagles went on an 11-6 run to tie the game at 59.
- From there, Samuels made the Pride's final basket of the game on a layup in the paint to give them a 61-59 lead with 2:28 left. Then, the Eagles saw Jordan Carpenter make a driving layup that resulted in a shooting foul and went on to convert the ensuing free-throw attempt to take a 62-61 lead with 1:27 left.
- The Pride had an attempt to take the lead in the final seconds, but missed a jump shot and had to follow Carpenter after the Eagles got the rebound. Carpenter added two more points on a pair of free throws to set up the Pride's final shot attempt of the game.
- Charlotte Stern also finished in double figures for the Pride, netting 11 points.

The Pride will hit the road again on Wednesday when they travel to Reading to face Albright in MAC Commonwealth action. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m.
